A Tribute to Side-Scrollers
By: Nikhil Singh   |   Jul 28, 2007
A long, long time ago, the world existed in only two tangible dimensions. The third dimension of depth, the Z axis (the other two being X & Y), was never heard of and the world lived a long, boring side scrolling nightmare - people were flat like paper (you could carry a whole family in a folder) and had an eye on either side of their head like gold fish; their habits were as weird as their looks, for instance a few of them loved bonking their head on random objects, munching on mushrooms (like they’re the last edible thing on earth), beating up and killing things without any prior argument/disagreement, and other stuff that I’m sure you don’t want to know about.

Those were dark, demented times indeed but not everything that came from that period was all bad. In an attempt to study their own kind, people developed interactive software called Video Games. These ‘Video Games’ they created were actually limited to side-scrollers, but then again, so were they. It didn’t really teach them much about themselves, but it sure got them hooked real bad. Eventually the entire human race lost itself in gaming, became lazy, and started fattening up; so much so, that their fattening of their bodies unknowingly moved them into the third dimension. So without further ado (and without any more of the nonsense), let’s take a look at some of these awesome side-scrollers that drove a whole generation of gamerkind, before the onset of the third dimension…

Cool, You should have included more games though, like the old Atari 2600 games like Keystone Kapers where you played cops and robbers with elevators and everything. The main guy even looked a bit like mario :P It wasn't all that detailed was sidescrolling to the truest sense :D There was Pitfall too which was a sidescroller. But yeah, Mario indeed is the father of em all :D

Also you should have shown how side scrollers have evolved in the ages, the best example being Viewtful Joe which is one of the Viewtifullest games of last gen.

Oh yeah! Contra.. one of the best examples for co-op side scrolling indeed! It was so much fun! I played it on a Media WhizKid :D Its one of the best experiences ever!
