Batman Vengeance (2001)
PS2, Xbox, GameCube, PC
Ubisoft had finally done it! Not only did they make a good Batman game, they also managed to get him to do a bit of adventuring as well (and not just keep beating up mindless goons). Based on the Batman animated series, Batman vengeance gave players a real sense of control over the caped crusader, with his being able to use the grappling hook when required, indulge in a bit of puzzle solving, and actually be a detective for a change.
Though the game was definitely a step in the right direction, it wasn't perfect. There were some issues that made controlling Batman a bit difficult to maneuver in tricky levels. But gripes aside, fans knew that the perfect Batman game wasn't too far away. Little did they know.
