Tribute: Criterion Games
By: Avinash Bali   |   Feb 24,2007
Starting this week, we at Tech2 have decided to honor our favorite developers/games/ anything game-related with a series of articles that pay tribute to their efforts in this field. Don’t worry, this isn’t shameless promotion of any sort nor have we been bought over by any of them; it’s just our way of showing them that we care and hey, no harm done in sharing the love right? So without further ado, I give you our very first candidate, game developer, Criterion Games.

For the uninformed, Criterion Games is a British game development studio located in Guildford, England and is best known for their Burnout Series of games as well as their Renderware engine that’s been used in tons of games like their very own Burnout series, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, GTA Vice City, Manhunt, the more recent Crackdown and lots more. The company was founded way back in 1993 and it wasn’t until they were bought over by Electronic Arts in 2004 (that’s when Burnout 3 Takedown happened) were they put on the map (which is basically when they were noticed by American audiences). Now before Burnout and Black they did develop certain games, which may have garnered a certain amount of cult status but why waste time on all of that; lets take a look at some of the stuff that made them legends.

Burnout (2001)

The granddaddy of all Burnout games, this game burst onto the racing scene at a time when developers were busy churning out realistic driving simulators like Gran Turismo 3. Burnout managed to captivate audiences with its fast paced arcade-ish gameplay and breakneck speeds which would soon become trademarks of this series. The game offered players upto sixteen tracks where their skills were pushed to the limit and the only way to dominate those tracks was driving rashly and the more reckless you were, the more boost got added to your meter, which when maxed out gave your car a super speed boost.
