Next-Generation Gaming Under Rs. 50,000
By: Nikhil Singh   |   Apr 13, 2007

Console gaming has come a long way since the days of the Super Nintendo, SEGA Mega Drive and their look-a-likes such as the Media Little Master (I’m sure that most of you old school Indian gamers remember the Little Master). Back then, to get a piece of the action, you just needed to shell out a small chunk of your allowance (ok, maybe a little more than that). Now however, the console wagon has turned from a humble, wooden, low cost vehicle to a full blown, pimped out, ultra expensive next-generation vehicle with gold rims. To hop onto it, you need to shed out a huge chunk of your savings, or splurge many months’ salary, or even sell certain bodily organs if the need be. But once you do get yourself hooked onto next-generation gaming, there’s no looking back, and the rewards are plenty. If you have a fat wallet, there’s no problem and sky’s the limit, but if you’re not that economically blessed, we at Tech2 have come up with a small guide that’ll have you chainsawing your way into the next generation in no time.

We’ll take things one step at a time, starting with a next generation console.

Step 1: The White Devil

To get onto the next-gen wagon, the first thing you’re gonna need is a next-generation console (no surprise there). Since the PS3 hasn’t been launched in India yet (and since it’s on the steeper side) your only option is an Xbox 360. You have a choice here – the Xbox 360 Pro or the Xbox 360 Core unit. The Pro unit has a wireless controller, a 20 GB hard drive, a composite cable, a multimedia remote and the console, of course. The Core Unit on the other hand, comes with the console, no hard drive, an AV cable, and a wired controller. Since the Pro unit is quite anally priced, and we don’t need the composite cable or the multimedia remote anyway, we’ll go for the Core unit. Another good thing about this is that the wired controller you get with the Core unit can be used with your PC too.
The only issue now is saving games, which is something you can’t do without a hard drive. You could finish games in one long stretch at a go, but ermm, we really wouldn’t recommend that, no matter how hardcore you are. Since the hard drive is ridiculously expensive, we suggest getting a memory card, which should set you back for about Rs. 2000.

Xbox 360 Core – Rs. 19,990
Memory Card – Rs. 2,000 (Approx.)

hey, Now X-box 360 Elite is out, with HDMI Port & Bigger Hard Disk.
Same is the case with PS3 of Sony.
Now Nintendo Wii (made after 2008) will have HDMI. Sadly, its booked till 2009, even after the production capacity increase by Nintendo.

Playing with X-Box 360 and no 5.1 Surround Speakers??? Just get a Creative/Altec Lansing 5.1 for 3K instead of that stupid 2.1 setup!!!
Grawp @ Apr 17, 2007
But if you see channels like ZeeTV and DD in that.. you will definately feel its much worse that what you cable gave... Even HBO isn't that good.. only the Star Channles (especially Star World) are Good.

One will have to wait till Set Top boxes with Component Outs to enjoy DTH in HDTVs

And you see... even in you 17" Monitor you can play games with resolution of 1240x768 or more.. and you will definitely see the difference.. there is not thing like size making it look better... Its just a case of thought.. coz if one thinks that it looks good in 32" then no matter what it will be the same for him, it wont look good in a smaller screen.(even though its the same)

@ Blogger

From what I know..32" is the standard size for a HDTV. Anything less, wouldnt show justice to HD.

@ Reetesh

I knew that, but at the moment, DTH is the service which provides best quality(picture) in India.
Praveen @ Apr 15, 2007
all expensive except for the speakers... how sad!!!!
george @ Apr 15, 2007
ok you guys are asking for it.

1. CRT TVs don't do HD resolutions (not generally anyway)
2. the INCH of the LCD has NOTHING to do with 1080P. 24" LCDs can do 1080p HD.
3. The 32" LCD u talk about does 1366x768, which is rubbish for the 360.

and for those who dont know, 1080p means it should do a resolution of 1920x1080.

@ rohit
360 and pc games are going hand in hand, but is cheaper to invest in the 360 coz most of those best selling games for pc will release much later than the 360 one

and i guess hdtv is good only for next gen gaming for now
any idea whether iptv will come out with HD channels

@arjun
last time i checked this is a free country, dont be a kid and if u find something wrong with wut i said mention it, dont use fancy wrds,
i was in a bad mood that day :) so the way i expressed myself may be a lttle extreme, for that i apologize
Madmax @ Apr 14, 2007
Yeah, if you're not a 360/PS3 gamer, I don't see the point in getting a HDTV, currently atleast. But if you are a gamer, and I'm sure most of us who visit this site are, you're going to have to purchase a HDTV to play next-gen games the way they were meant to be played. The difference in the graphical quality is very high when you compare a HDTV and an SDTV side by side. If you can't afford an HDTV, then getting a 19" widescreen monitor would probably be your best bet.

And Rocky, a 360 game costs Rs 2,510, and the platinum hits cost lesser. If you mod your 360 you can play copied games sure, but you would be missing out on Live, and Live extends the lifespan of the game greatly while providing excellent content. You can go ahead and mod it if you don't give a shit about Live though.

@Praveen

Even DTH in India Provides just Composite(normal A/V cables) outputs... It looks like SH*T in a Blender Just without the broccoli.. (only because its not RF output but Composite)
Reetesh @ Apr 14, 2007
@madmax

Why don't you GTFO this site and go back to school?
Arjun @ Apr 14, 2007
a 22" HDTV? I wouldnt recomend it, cus the standard size for a HDTV must be atleast 32", other wise, it will look like crap.

And s purchasing a HDTV now a feasible option? Cus, most of us have cable tv, and not DTH or CAS. And Cable on HDTV looks like SH*T in a belnder, with brocoli. What do u say abt these?
Praveen @ Apr 14, 2007
the problem with xbox 360 is that many of its best selling games are going to make it to the pc to boost windows vista sales. so it is better to just upgrade ur pc which is going to be much more cheaper.
though its better to wait for some time until some real conformations come out about the system.
rohit @ Apr 14, 2007
tehdevil,so i really dont have an option but to shell out about 3k per game.
rocky @ Apr 14, 2007
Arup Roy, I completely agree with you. That television set is mighty impressive, and it's amazing that it can do 1080p because the set is very affordable, compared to other HDTVs.
TehDevil @ Apr 14, 2007
I think what makes more sense is to actually go for the philips 29 inches Full HD TV which sells for just 25K.
Arup Roy @ Apr 14, 2007
Rocky, yes, a modded 360 can play backups. You will need to either flash the system's firmware or install a modchip. However, I wouldn't recommend this as if you tamper with the console, your warranty gets voided, and worse - you can't play on Xbox Live. (It hasn't released here but still.) Why mod your console and miss out on the best online gaming service that money can offer? So yes, it's not a good idea mate.

Anyways, well written article. But I'd recommend the HDD over the memory card as if you connect you Live, you're going to want to download game demos and videos, and the memory card cannot provide enough space for this. Heck, even the 20 GB removable hard disk can get cramped in no time.
TehDevil @ Apr 13, 2007
really useless article
y shud i be bothered wut setup u got in ur office, look at facts
the premium version sells period
and y the hell should i need to buy a monitor and its hard to find cables, get a HD tv done and i bet the tv delivers better sound than that dumb creative speakers
no money to buy ^ ,wait, wrk hard ,buy, enjoy
if ure going next gen willing to spend 3k on games, value doesnt come in picture
Madmax @ Apr 13, 2007
Boss , What about the Philips 29"CRT HDTV , which retails around Rs.22500.
I believe that would have given the whole setup more value for money.

XBOX 360 Pro , which is around Rs.27000 would be around Rs 5000 more ( 27000-(20000+2000))than your setup, which has 20GB hard disk , component cables , wireless controller etc..

So , i believe the system conf needs a bit of change , according to me .
What do you say ?
Sandeep @ Apr 13, 2007
Too bad there is no HD Monitor with Component Inputs :( or else it would have been so much easier.

and also..you forgot to mention about the Ethernet cable...does it come with the core version too ?

and the HDD is more recommendable than the memory card. its a complete waste of money IMO.. just for a bit more one can get more than 10 times the storage space... one cannot download many of the arcade games onto the mem card even. and I think even including that it would be under 50K.
Reetesh @ Apr 13, 2007
can modded xbox 360 play yet to be released burned games?
