Console gaming has come a long way since the days of the Super Nintendo, SEGA Mega Drive and their look-a-likes such as the Media Little Master (I’m sure that most of you old school Indian gamers remember the Little Master). Back then, to get a piece of the action, you just needed to shell out a small chunk of your allowance (ok, maybe a little more than that). Now however, the console wagon has turned from a humble, wooden, low cost vehicle to a full blown, pimped out, ultra expensive next-generation vehicle with gold rims. To hop onto it, you need to shed out a huge chunk of your savings, or splurge many months’ salary, or even sell certain bodily organs if the need be. But once you do get yourself hooked onto next-generation gaming, there’s no looking back, and the rewards are plenty. If you have a fat wallet, there’s no problem and sky’s the limit, but if you’re not that economically blessed, we at Tech2 have come up with a small guide that’ll have you chainsawing your way into the next generation in no time.
We’ll take things one step at a time, starting with a next generation console.
Step 1: The White Devil
To get onto the next-gen wagon, the first thing you’re gonna need is a next-generation console (no surprise there). Since the PS3 hasn’t been launched in India yet (and since it’s on the steeper side) your only option is an Xbox 360. You have a choice here – the Xbox 360 Pro or the Xbox 360 Core unit. The Pro unit has a wireless controller, a 20 GB hard drive, a composite cable, a multimedia remote and the console, of course. The Core Unit on the other hand, comes with the console, no hard drive, an AV cable, and a wired controller. Since the Pro unit is quite anally priced, and we don’t need the composite cable or the multimedia remote anyway, we’ll go for the Core unit. Another good thing about this is that the wired controller you get with the Core unit can be used with your PC too.
The only issue now is saving games, which is something you can’t do without a hard drive. You could finish games in one long stretch at a go, but ermm, we really wouldn’t recommend that, no matter how hardcore you are. Since the hard drive is ridiculously expensive, we suggest getting a memory card, which should set you back for about Rs. 2000.
Xbox 360 Core – Rs. 19,990
Memory Card – Rs. 2,000 (Approx.)
