Valentine's Day for Techies
By: Shayne Rana   |   Feb 08, 2008

That’s my suggestion for a tech-happy Valentine’s Day. In case you’re not into elaborate plans (or are plain lazy), I can recommend some simpler ideas. First off, a music player always makes a great gift. Here are a couple of choices that won’t set you back too much.

Creative Zen Stone/Zen Stone Plus

The Zen Stone is a basic 1GB MP3 player with no frills. The Zen Stone Plus has a small OLED display as well, along with a built-in stopwatch and voice recorder, and is available in 2GB. The best part is both models are available in plenty of great colors, so you’ll be spoilt for choice. The Zen Stone is priced at Rs 2150 and the Zen Stone Plus is available for Rs 4150.

iPod nano

The nano is a great gift and comes packed with memory. The new nano boasts Apple’s new iPod interface and some extra functions and features such as better games and a larger 2 inch screen for videos. Of course, this is not a cheap gift – the 4GB version is priced Rs 5700 and the 8GB will set you back by at least Rs 7800. But again you have plenty of colors to choose from, including the new Pink edition.

When it comes to gifts, how can one overlook mobile phones? If your Valentine has had the same handset for about a year, he or she is sure to be bored by it. So here are a couple of phones to consider...

Sony Ericsson W200i

This may be a phone from Sony Ericsson's lower-end Walkman series but it's decent enough. It's equipped with a VGA camera and an FM radio with RDS. It supports external memory with M2 cards so there's enough space for music. It supports WAP and GPRS but doesn't have Bluetooth. But then you can't expect too much for Rs 4,700, can you? The good thing is it's available in some really cool colors, such as Street Gray, Black, Mono Blue, Sweet Pink and Aqua white.

Nokia 5300 Xpress Music or Nokia 5200

The 5300 has a decent enough music player and is available in red and black. This slider phone supports Bluetooth with A2DP profile, GPRS with EDGE, infrared, microSD external memory support, and FM radio. It has a 1.3 megapixel camera. The 5300 would cost you about Rs 6300.

If your pocket's feeling the pinch there's a slightly cheaper version, the Nokia 5200. This is available in blue and red, and has a VGA camera with a 128 x 128 pixel display. However, it doesn’t have a Bluetooth A2DP profile. The 5200 should set you back by about Rs 5000.

These are of course just a few suggestions on what you could do on V-Day. In case you have better ideas please email me, or post your suggestions in a forum thread or in our comments section. Who knows, you could be helping me out too...

Happy Valentine's Day!
