Gadgets for the Road
By: Shayne Rana   |   Jul 24, 2008

Gone are the days when man looked to the stars for guidance in the wild, or moss on a tree to tell him which way is North. Today the seasoned traveler or the rugged (and even the not-so-rugged) outdoors person who love gadgets can rely on some handy devices while on their excursions. Most "trekking techies" will know what I’m talking about, but for those of you who’d like to join that elite group, do take a look at some of the multipurpose gadgets you could use while exploring the wild outdoors.

Penknife
I’m sure the first thing that comes to mind is "d-uh, of course". While you may not construe a penknife to be a geeky gadget, believe me, there are a few out there that would easily make the list. For instance, Victorinox has a product called Swiss Flash that combines a USB pen drive and a small LED flashlight – perfect for the wild outdoors.

What that means is that if you have a music player in your car that supports USB port playback, you can store your music and play it back from the knife’s port. The USB port is removable for convenience. The flashlight is rather obvious, so it merits no comment. Of course you also get the usual blade, scissors, nail file, screwdriver... and even a pressurized ballpoint pen.

Portable Chargers
It’s important for gizmo freaks to make sure that their gear is always charged and ready for action. Due to the lack of charging ports in the wild that would not have been easy to accomplish even a few years ago, but now it’s a whole new ballgame. Portable chargers come in all shapes, sizes and kinds. Motorola already supplies some of their handsets with additional portable chargers.

Then there are standalone portable chargers manufactured by third party companies like Thanko (famous for its wind-up charger) and IOGEAR, which offer adapters for various devices. Juice them up and use them only when you’re absolutely low on power. They’re small and light enough to carry easily, and most store enough power to charge your mobile or other device at least 1.5 times over.

There are also solar chargers available in forms that include clothing. Click here for more information on these portable chargers.
