PSP Movie Conversion for Dummies
By: Gagan Gupta   |   Sep 09, 2006
PSP (PlayStation Portable) owners usually have lots of queries regarding watching DivX movies on their PSPs. The thing is, unless you have downgraded your PSP to version 1.5 and are open to using unsigned homebrew applications on it, you can’t watch a DivX movie directly on the PSP. Not without converting it to it’s native MP4 file format first. We show you how.

Getting Started
Here’s what you need to have:
  • PlayStation Portable (Firmware 2.0 and above)
  • A decent capacity Memory Stick Pro Duo with around 350MB free space(inside the PSP)
  • PSP’s USB cable (or a memory card reader that accepts Memory Stick Duos)
  • The latest version of Apple’s QuickTime software (free download)
  • PSP Video 9 version 1.74 (free download)
  • A DivX (or Xvid, WMV, MOV, AVI) movie file for conversion

Install QuickTime and PSP Video 9.

It’s important that you’re aware of the aspect ratio of the video you’re converting or it may appear unevenly stretched. Here’s how you figure out the aspect ratio of the video:

A fullscreen video as the one above has a 4:3 aspect ratio

A widescreen movie such as this one is of 16:9 aspect ratio. This is the native aspect ratio of your PSP screen.

If the movie appears ultra-wide like in the image above, then it’s aspect ratio is 2.35:1.

Using the above guidelines, figure out the aspect ratio of the video you’re converting and accordingly use the setting tutorials in the next page.
