7 Basic Questions About HDTVs Answered
By: Gagan Gupta   |   Sep 23, 2006

What else will I need to buy along with an HDTV?
High definition entertainment can be quite an expensive hobby in India. Buying an HDTV is just a start to a series of gadgets that you may require for that true home-theatre system. Here are a few additional accessories that will complete your home theatre.

Philips IPS01 Concept Blu-Ray Player and Burner

High Definition Video Players
HD-DVDs and Blu-Rays are yet to become mainstream in India (or anywhere else for that matter). While they're the only kind of movie players that output video in true HD, for now you'll still be relying on the good old DVDs for your home theatre needs. Pamper yourself and get a good DVD player that supports proper high definition up-scaling, while you wait for these monsters to land on our shores.

Xbox 360 Videogame Console

Xbox 360
You seriously want to make the most of your system? Then get a Xbox 360. Nothing pushes a home entertainment system to its full potential like a game console, and the only console to date that supports true HD (to date) is the Xbox 360 .

Update: This feature was originally written in September 2006, when the PlayStation 3 had not yet released. Currently you have a choice between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 for making the most of your HDTV.

Windows XP Media Centre Edition running on an HD display

High Definition Media Center PCs
Not just any desktop PC, these babies were built keeping quality home entertainment in mind. With our suggested configuration , you can have true high definition output straight from your PC to your HDTV. Hook this rig up to a killer sound system as well and you have a home theatre and a HD gaming system as well. Moreover, you can use this for basic PC purposes like web browsing and doing your office work — in HD!

Can you give your valuable feedback on the Acer AL2616W Series LCD monitor, Is it computer monitor ar LCD TV.
Arvind Kumar Jha @ Dec 29, 2007
Hey Vishwas,
Was your TV a multiformat TV? That could explain why you could make it work without a converter.

Im planning to get my Samsung rear-projection TV back, which is a NTSC only TV.

Any one knows how to make that work in India?
Aditya @ Jul 11, 2007
Hello Vishwas,

Which LCD TV do you have that works without converter in India?
Is it a HDTV?

More information on this will be very much appreciated as very soon I will be in same boat.
Abhay Chaudhary @ Jul 08, 2007

Hello,
In fact I was searching whether if I buy a HD TV from USA or NZ for its use in india, more precisely in PUNE,Maharashtra, will it be a worth purchase or not?In the sense whether can I get full benifit of HDTV?
Whether Hathway Cable service provider can get me best out of HDTV?
arun alshi @ Jan 29, 2007
Hey guys out there.. Awesome content for an indian website! Keep up the good work!! My 2 cents.. More graphics / pics showing various components (player, display and interconnects) would be alot helpful. You have said that component cables can give hd quality, which i need to cross check. As far as i know component goes till 480p but to achieve the standard 1080i or 720p a digital video connection like hdmi or dvi is required. Also, i think every player is switching to hdmi and so dvi might be off soon!
Satish, Mumbai @ Dec 01, 2006
Hi praveen. Thanks for pointing that out. As i mentioned in the update above, the feature was originally written back in september, when the ps3 was still two months away from release.

and i never mentioned hdmi on the xbox 360, it supports hd through component cables.

cheers!
Gagan Gupta, Tech2.com @ Dec 01, 2006
What do u mean by xbox 360 is the only console that supports hd quality? Forgot about ps3? Even though its not in india, i believe it should have been mentioned. And i don't think xbox 360 has an hdmi port in it.

Is it true to display hd resolution you should have a good source (beside panel).I am having denon 2930 dvd player which can upscale 1080p or say manipulate it. I have learn through you that to display such resolution both source and panel have hdmi input,
in most high end dvd player they have hdmi but what about tata sky or dish tv they don't even have component out .
binay singh,jamshedpur,jharkhand @ Nov 26, 2006
Do digital services like tata, dish etc provide 576p/i (dvd quality) video resolution? I dont think that they do, even though they advertise it like that. No set top box has ypbpr outputs not even s-video, you have only component out. I feel, that even though hdtv is great to look at, there is very little media available currently to watch. So dvd quality is the best bet for now! I'll wait for the prices of hd ready tv's to drop and media becomes more common, let the idiots cough up the money for hdtv and watch cable tv on it.. Hehe..
great article, i didn't find anywhere else such a good article especially in the indian context.
Indrajit - Pune @ Nov 26, 2006
Which is a better tv lcd or plasma ?? In 30 to 42inch size
HARISH - MUMBAI @ Nov 21, 2006
I want that
SURENDER HISAR @ Nov 19, 2006
Digital cable ( tata sky, dish tv and local digital cable ) is not hd. Using an hd display will not change anything compared to a sd
display.
hdtv will only be useful for input from true hd sources either from
hd-dvd/bluray discs/sd discs upscaled to 1080i , hd broadcasting ( unlikely in the near future in india ) or hd gaming consoles with games in hd.
Vivek, Bangalore @ Nov 13, 2006
I dont think people would still be able to understand whats the difference between 'i' and 'p' as it had not been explained abt the p. So while interlacing has been explained, being pretty complicated also, i think it would be great if you re-edit the i and include p in a less complicated manner. Apart from that - great articled guys or - gals
