With so many options available in HDTVs today, there are a lot of questions that a common man has about the technology and its practical uses. We answer some of the most commonly asked questions to help you know more about the technology.
What makes a High Definition TV better than my regular TV?
My best answer to this is — go to your nearest showroom and take a look. The one thing that clearly separates a HDTV from a SDTV (standard definition TV) is the resolution. While the SDTVs sold in India (PAL) are not capable of displaying more than 576i (720x576), a HDTV starts at the resolution of 720p (1280x720) and currently goes up to 1080p (1920x1080).
The increase in resolution gives you a crisper output and a much higher detail level that a SDTV is capable of producing.
What does the ’p’ and the ‘I’ in the resolution stand for, and which one is better?
As I mentioned before the resolution a SDTV gives you is 480i which is 640x480 interlaced. Interlacing on a CRT TV first displays alternate lines of the image and then draws the line in between to produce the complete image without using too much bandwidth. The process takes place too fast to be noticeable by the human eye.
