Sennheiser vs Bose: War of the Gods
By: Siddharth Bhatia  &  Laiq Qureshi   |   Apr 17, 2008

Performance
Going in alphabetical order, we’ll do Bose first, and Sennheiser next. The Bose proved to be a nice-sounding pair, especially with the NC circuit on. They are not too effective because their design leaks sound in acoustically, but does the job satisfactorily.

Sennheiser, on the other hand, sounds insanely good when the NC is off, just like regular headphones. In fact the acoustical noise canceling is very nice. When on, they just sound weird; the ears need some time to get used to the sucked-out pressure feeling. But they are effective if you look at it theoretically. And yes, there is a little noise in the circuit that’s induced and audible, when music is off.

The Sennheiser uses two regular AAA batteries, while the Bose has its own batteries included, rechargeable ones at that. So what’s the better choice? We feel the Sennheiser's good old AAA batteries are easier to deal with, though fancy rechargeable batteries may appeal to some people.

Price and Logic
At Rs 19,900 Sennheiser just beats Bose, which costs just a little bit more at Rs 20,600. Some pointers favor Bose, but Sennheiser also has a case. Both are expensive (20K for a pair of headphones is a ridiculous premium), but for pure audio listening Sennheiser takes the cake. Still, we must add that Bose's noise cancellation is better!

Guys let me introduce you to another world of audio pleasure. Rise above Bose vs Sennheiser debate and try a Grado. Not the best looking haedphones but sound quality is above the two here. I have tried all of these and bought a Grado. Max bang for the buck

People who were previously listening to Sony-Aiwa & now suddenly flu$hed with moolahs$ from their hi-paying jobs want to migrate to Bo$e, in my opinion pure show-off$(to impress girls). Sennheiser is clear winner.

Well let me add my two cents worth here. I just bought a pair of Bose headphones and I own a pair of Sennheiser and I had heard everybody RAVE about how great Bose headphones are. Well, Sennheiser kicks their ass all over the road. When I use my Sennheisers the bass is much cleaner for orchestral/symphonic music, the output is better and much more clear. I am sorely disappointed with Bose. Wow, these really suck and they are quite more expensive. Here's the thing, I'm a music producer and every studio I have walked into uses Sennheiser, hands down. I've never seen Bose headphones in a recording studio. I'm probably going to take my Bose headphones back and get a refund, that's how bad they are!

Haha, NES you just made me LOL!

Yes, these are the people I am talking about too, to whom all MP3 players are iPods!

Bose is doubtlessly the most $hit over priced company I have ever seen. My friend just got himself an expensive Bose headphones, and believe me they are actually the most shittiest headphones I have ever heard in my life! I got myself frontech headphones for voice chatting over the internet for 200 Rs. and guess what, they have a better output than my friend's bose headphones. Left the poor guy's mouth open when he heard them. Anyway, I think everyone who is ranting in here is just pleased or overwhelmed with the image of bose sound systems since they have existed for so long in India and have had a reputation of being the toys for the rich, while Sennheiser has just introduced itself in India. And yes as everyone has been saying, noise cancellation is overrated.
DS @ Apr 25, 2008
WTF would you do with noise cancellation which is nothing but overhyped. On any given day, an earbud from Sennheiser/Bose is much better compared to the big ear-coverers that these two premium brands offer. Lastly, I've tried these way-too-expensive earpieces from either of them and my verdict would be to go with Sennheiser. That's right folks.

JD, according to you, "the god of all music is Bose" and "The baap of all music players is the iPod", right?

You sound like an extremely ignorant person. Sennheiser headphones are renowned the world over for their quality. One day, when you damage your ears thanks to constantly listening to Himesh Reshammiya on your iPod-Bose combo, you might visit an ENT specialist? Guess which headphones they will use to test your hearing? SENNHEISER. Get that? Not Bose.

Damn. I hate ignorant people who don't know that they are ignorant in the first place...
NES @ Apr 21, 2008
Bose produces over-priced crap for the uninitiated and the impressionable. Look, for the amount of moolah you spend on Bose products, you can buy gear from other companies that may be infinitely better. People who blindly buy stuff just because his neighbour and his grandma thinks it is good is ignorant at best.

Have you even tried Sennheisers? "Bose is God" - give me a break.
Audiophile @ Apr 21, 2008
There is only one god and the god of music is Bose. WTF newbie? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
jash @ Apr 19, 2008
Consider this, you are out on let's say some obscure beach in India, and after hours of goofing around your battery conks off. With the bose, you have to go back to your room or the nearest available charging port. With Sennheiser, you can simply buy and not worry at all.

Having said that, at the same time you can enjoy music better without the noise cancellation, in passive mode that is. Noise cancellation is heavily overrated, and underdeveloped. Passively, javascript:void(0)
javascript:void(0)Sennheiser keeps its sound pretty laid-back. You don't want unnecessary over-amplification, like in the case of the BOSE. Sennheiser comes closer to truer sound than BOSE, while there's no denying Bose is good too. But at the end Sennheiser wins
JDsucks @ Apr 19, 2008
THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD......and the GOD OF MUSIC IS BOSE.....
Pravin.Peter.Utankar @ Apr 19, 2008
Just read all the comments, JD, I agree with you 100%
Blogger @ Apr 18, 2008
Guys, while i fully agree on "what you say matters here" how about you give us some battery life scores?

Also, my QC3s came with TWO rechargeable batteries and one charge lasts me some 15+ hours of listening. 2 batteries are enough for even the longest haul flights or even the worst traffic jams :)

Plus I really like the compact charging unit that Bose has as well as the cable extender that lets me do an audio out from the TV when people at home don't want to be bothered with F1 engine "noise" on race days :)
Blogger @ Apr 18, 2008
i think both are 'overpriced crap'. I think nOise cancelltion is. Sennheise though has some good headphones tat cost much cheaper. I like AKG!!
Savio @ Apr 18, 2008
Sennheiser crap? and the fact that you like Bose means you know nothing about audio, mr. jd from delhi. I have owned a lot of sennheiser and they can kick BOse ass in the sky. Its guys like you that pay dick companies like BOse their hack money. Sennheiser is a better company in anything than bose, which is just overpriced crap.
karan @ Apr 18, 2008
yes JD I otally agree with you....
CGA @ Apr 18, 2008
what rubbish !
Bose beats this sennheiser crap any day !!!
i have a pair of QC3's myself. They are the best. PERIOD. the weight is just right. the senn'z are just plain heavy. and besides, a 2 rechargeable batteries with a performance of upto 20 hrs atleast. oh-come on. you can beat that. it terms of performance, well let me just say that having smaller headphones on your head during a flight is way way better than sitting around with big uglies. my vote goes to Bose hands down
