LG
LG has the DV259 and DN192 as its two most selling current models. The DV 259 retails for Rs 3190, while the DN 192 is yours for Rs 4490 (discounted retail price). The DN192 happens to be one of the cheaper HDMI upscaling players out there; we reviewed it in detail recently. It’s a new model with quite a lot of hype.
This player has a sleek design, with a minimal front panel – literally so, as no buttons are present on it. The top half of the front panel has a black strip with a plastic covering that houses the tray and display, while the buttons are on the top panel, just at the brink.
So this is an interesting design, putting the device into the modern and classy category. It plays DivX, supports HDMI, has a USB slot, supports JPEG. In fact, it probably has all you can ask for in a consumer DVD player, apart from the regular component video and 5.1 channel analog output facility that are present in all the DVD players in this feature.
Performance was good in its category, though colors acted up occasionally, especially in intense animation movies such as Finding Nemo. The jaggie lines were in the tolerable zone though, and I liked the HDMI picture – it was clear and precise in 720p.
Onida
Onida is the underdog, or so it seems. It easily has the capability to compete with foreign brands, so I have included its products here. The prevailing model in most retailers is the DFX 5957, and the higher-end DFX 8570. There are other models in between, with different combinations of features.
The DFX 5957 is what we checked, and also the DFX 8570. The latter supports HDMI, while both have DivX support. The DFX 8670 costs a shade above 5K (Rs 5790 to be precise), while the DFX 5957 will set you back only by Rs 3090. USB support is present in another model, the DFX 8500.
Onida models have a very interesting USP: they claim to play scratched discs perfectly. I don’t know how true this is, but anyone who has some bad discs might add a point here.
The performance of these models is very good – especially the 8570, which has good upscaling, deinterlacing, the works. Colours are again an issue, but in this category it is imprudent to expect too much... if I insert Avia or the DVE essentials test disc, it's quite conceivable that a dozen problems may pop out.
Conclusion
So now you have the info you need to get going. Please check the models yourself and narrow down the options to fit your requirement while you're on your buying spree. Just don’t confuse the model numbers with the prices!
