Sound system – Philips HTR 5205
Rs 10,990
The best choice to go in for are the HT-bundled packages, as single components will take the prices sky-high. In this budget too there are some very neat packages, especially one from Philips that I demoed not too long ago. It comprises a receiver and five satellites plus subwoofer.
This one has great features. It decodes DTS, Dolby and Dolby ProLogic 2 streams, and has an inbuilt tuner and MP3 line-in jack to play tracks directly from your MP3 player. The amplification is class D, which accounts for the compact size. I personally found the sound too 'fast', but it definitely works well on an HT system.
The sound is clean and powerful enough for a medium-sized room, about 250 sq ft. The bass is not low and deep enough to digest your lunch, though it's nice and impressive. Highs and mids are fine, a little forward-sounding. I didn’t expect audiophile quality from the system, so it didn't disappoint in any way.

Conclusion
That concludes our roundup of the best stuff available for reasonable prices in today’s buzzing market. Just to add a side note without naming brands, let me say there's a lot of useless junk out there. So if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Tread with caution!
And here's a heads-up: the next version of this feature will feature the Rs 1,00,000 price bracket. The brands and models will change correspondingly, and you could well see Onkyos and Harmans stepping into the limelight. If you have the budget, wait for it.
But for now, take a look at the sub-50K segment and let us know what you think.
