The Ultimate In-Car Entertainment System
By: Siddharth Bhatia   |   Jul 25, 2008

You must have figured out that we at Tech 2.0 are doing an ‘on the road’ series, with each writer talking about some aspect of portable tech. I wondered what to do with my beat (audio/video), and then it dawned: why not get the whole system into a car?

I’m not just talking about audio; I like pushing it all the way, so I decided to have a video system and a gaming console. The car’s backseat could double as the couch; and it basically makes the whole AV entertainment system portable. This setup is perfect for both car fanatics and tech fanatics, but I'd say being both a car and tech fanatic is the ultimate!

Before we start, I must tell you this is not just theory; we actually went on the road and interviewed a top-notch professional installer. His name is Ajay Kamath, and he's chief of operations for an outfit called Hermit Audio. The company is the distributor for high-end audio brands for both home and car, and each brand mentioned in this article was made available by Hermit Audio.

We shot a video of the process of installation at the company outlet in central Mumbai, with Ajay providing some valuable gyaan as he did up the car. The car was provided by Sound Factor, an authorized dealer of Hermit Audio. Be sure to check out the video and photo gallery!

Audio System
Our main car stereo head was from Pioneer, but more about the head later. For the audio we used Ground Zero through and through, from the speakers to the amps and woofers. For design purposes we placed the amps inverted in MDF cabinets with a thick plastic transparent covering, to expose the interior electronics.

No coaxial speakers up front; we had a crossover for separating the mids and tweeters, both of which are attached on to the doors. After all, sound quality is of topmost priority here. In the rear we had 6x9 speakers and finally the 12-inch dual monster subwoofers.

Now, all of us who own cars will no doubt have an audio system installed. I'm talking about really going all the way by putting in video and gaming as well, so the next time you get a bonus or raise you can check these killer brands out, and soup up your chariot.

Dudes, read the title of this article “The Ultimate In-Car Entertainment System”, that means splurging a lot of cash into it.
So dont expect a bihari made pioneer unit & some dichik dichik speakers which will cost less than Rs5000.

Nice article Sid.
I'm just wondering, how many nano's I can buy if I dont buy this sort of car entertainment.(pun intended)
Rakesh @ Jul 28, 2008

Parag Sankhe @ Jul 28, 2008
Ahh just to clear the air,

By questioning the placement of a PS2 in a car, I never objected to the money part.

Heck, If I had the dough, I'd have a customized mark levinson system in my car ;)

Or maybe just stuff it with Illusion Carbon Series!
Paras Kamdar @ Jul 28, 2008
dude ur car rocks but blaze sticker suck
anku @ Jul 28, 2008
Ive auditioned this car and the sound levels just goes insane, with every beat and clarity in the car, nope this car dosen't required to be on engine running mode, and its not even all the time playing PS2 or blasting the music, yess the installer/owner of the car is full enthusiast about car audio and will do its best for getting it.

Its true that stuff i expensive, but there are many cars in mumbai which is having systems 5times the price of this car system, after all quality comes expensive, even today you get all original stuff from your drivers to headunits from your wires to crimps/connectors..cheers it rocks and hats off these guys who are taking car audio to next level as the west..nice efforts.

Congratulations Ramie Paaji.... I should say now she is definately an envy for the ICE guys. Mission accomplished heh.

I would also like to ask few guys who say this article being rubbish. Guys which era are you all in? Talking about affording a music system like this doesnt require a wait period of 10 years. All it needs is passion (which needs to be cultivated) & Money off-course which is hard to earn (i agree too), but its being spent for something what you like.. Dont wanna get into an argument over here, but please learn to appreciate ones efforts. Hats Off Ramie.
Nikhil Kelshikar @ Jul 27, 2008
I still wonder why I would want to watch a movie, OR play playstation in the car, especially with petrol prices getting to what they are! And I am know that all the above mentioned stuff requires you to run the car engine at all times!!

Ahh but if you have a lakh and a half to splurge on the car's audio system in the first place, petrol prices aren't really your concern ;)

P.S. - Illusion Audio is an amazing brand, I've got front and rear speakers from the Lucent series in my swift, running on JUST a sony head unit, and they still sound brilliant!
Paras Kamdar @ Jul 27, 2008
wait till all ur accessories gets stolen :P i dont even have a music system in my car mainly due to theft problems in my area.
sourabh @ Jul 26, 2008

ram @ Jul 26, 2008
HOW MANY Readers can afford this system even 10 yrs down the line.
if the answer is less than 1 percent, then the article is rubbish, waste of time
rahul @ Jul 26, 2008
