Dell XPS M1710
Dell makes a return to our roundup with its refresh of the Core2Duo platform. We have already featured the Core Duo version of this laptop in an earlier round up. The new refresh changes the CPU to the fastest Core2duo chip available the 7600 (clock speed of 2.33 GHz). It retains its powerful graphical subsystem and continues to be powered by the 7900 GTX 512 MB card. The laptop’s 17 Inch LCD panel also remains the same and retains its HD-ready resolution of 1900x1200 (WUXGA). The storage space has been upgraded from 80 GB to 100 GB and system memory doubled from 1 GB to 2 GB. In terms of connectivity, the laptop is fully equipped with six USB 2.0 slots, VGA and DVI outputs, a 4-in1 memory card reader and Firewire. An interesting upgrade to the Wi-Fi connectivity is the upgrade to 802.11n, which until date remains a technology that has not been yet ratified by the IEEE.

This powerful laptop will set you back by Rs. 1,45,000.

Toshiba Qosmio G35 AV600
Toshiba makes some of the most powerful machines in the mobile computing space. The Qosmio G35 is built on Intel’s latest mobile platform the "Merom" or the Core2Duo. It features a 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (T7200), an HD-Ready 17 inch display panel (1920×1200 res), an incredible amount of system storage (2x120 GB HDDs) and 2 GB of system RAM. The graphics duty is performed by a NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 GPU with 256MB of memory. In terms of connectivity options, this laptop is in a class of its own. It offers four USB 2.0 slots, Firewire, S-Video and HDMI. If that was not enough Toshiba also bundles in a TV tuner and a SPDIF port through which you can an external pair of speakers for better output. Two features, which deserve a special mention of their own, is the fact that this laptop features a HD DVD-ROM drive, which is also capable of writing standard DVD media. The second feature is RAID support. The two HDDs that are present on this laptop can be put either into RAID 0 support for speed or RAID 1 for data mirroring.

Overall, with such a powerful array of features and data protection, this laptop is fairly well priced at Rs. 1,50,000.

Excellent article, i liked the dell xps system. I have been using dell latitudes for over two years and they are really rugged and good featured.

i also liked the sony vaio, having one of these is like owing a ferrari.

i suggest you do a comparision of palmtop and other hand helds as well - probably that could be titled as "replacement for your laptop" :)

cheers,
abhishek sharma.

The major factor that still allows desktops to beat laptops is the cost. All these high end laptops retails above 70k. Most home users are willing to spare 25k - 40k max on a pc.

also, given the fact that computer hardware becomes redundant in no time, anyone with enough funds will also think twice before investing in something that will get oudated in a matter of months.

a desktop offers more hard disk space. One can change a component without worry eg: the latest graphics or sound card, more hard disk space, more memory, better keyboard or lcd display without much hassle. Desktop components cost less than their laptop counterparts and are easy to install.

manufacturer dependency can be avoided with non branded desktops and one can get of the best value for money items available.
