Enhancing Your S60 Device: Part III
By: Shayne Rana  &  Jayesh Mansukhani   |   Jun 21, 2008

In earlier instalments we showcased some applications that you could use to enhance your Series 60 handset with regard to multimedia and boosting connectivity options. In this instalment we shall cover a few more applications. Not all the apps we intend to show you are freeware; some will require you to purchase them online. Nevertheless they will come in handy, so take a look at these if you don’t already have them.

Call Filter

I’m sure that most of us (ahem…) important people have a problem getting too many calls when we’re busy with something. But more to the point are those annoying calls that keep coming in from pesky sale people who mispronounce your name and then try to sell you something. No offence meant, they’re just doing their job, but it’s still a pain. Call Filter allows users to block or unblock incoming calls by creating a filter rule. The application keeps a log of the calls it rejects. It also has a feature that allows you to select for how long a particular call that was rejected should be blocked.

Answering Machine (Trial)

This is definitely one of the better applications for a mobile phone. Rather than a voice mail service that you have to make a call to (and pay for), this app can be installed in your handset. It allows users to create their own messages and set the length of time before the application kicks in. It records the calls and saves them on the memory card, and you can play back the message though the phone’s speakers. Most of these applications that I downloaded and installed were not freeware, but they do allow 15-30 days' usage before asking you to purchase the license key.

Simple Calculator

To be honest we’ve never liked the preloaded Nokia calculator as it’s not too user friendly. The thing is to make the most out of the nav-pad you will need a calculator that has the calculation options in the center so it become far easier to navigate and use. There are quite a few freeware calculators, but the one I liked best was Calcium – it's both simple and efficient.
