SMS - Not Just Texting
By: Shayne Rana   |   Jul 19, 2008

SMS or Short Messaging Service is more than just a widely popular medium of communication between individuals. I’m not going to pretend that you, my readers, are children and need to be told more about it. We all know what texting means and what it involves. But I’d like to delve into some uses other than the obvious. Most of you will know what I’m talking about, but this feature is meant for those who may not, so please bear with me.

Information Superhighway?
There are plenty of websites that ask you to provide your mobile number in case you’d like to be aware of whatever’s going on at that site. There are also various services that mobile users can sign up with via their own service providers that allow them to keep in touch with current events via a simple SMS message. Think of it as a kind of RSS feed for those who don't own a WAP- or GPRS-enabled handset, or those who prefer a simpler way.

A SMS message, as most of you probably know, can have only up to a maximum of 170 characters. So you can’t expect to receive a whole news story. In such cases the service rendered would be in the form of a headline and usually a link that allows you to go to the web page where you can read the whole story from your web browser.

E-mail via SMS
A company called NETCORE has come up with a rather ingenious way by which users who don’t use Internet-capable handsets can send and receive e-mail. The solution is really quite simple. You can sign up with the company that provides this service for an annual fee ranging (from Rs 299 and Rs 999) and a monthly fee of Rs 25 to Rs 85 per month. This will allow you to receive and send a certain number of e-mails for that month. The good thing is each message can have up to 450 characters instead of the usual 170.

You can receive your entire e-mail on your handset and send replies as well. Again, you DON’T need an Internet-enabled handset; it works by simple SMS and it works perfectly with ISPs or mailing solutions, including MS Exchange, Lotus Notes, or any Linux-based solution. It’s like having a BlackBerry without the BlackBerry!

I am an ngpay user and I loved the applicaction and service.

Just FYI - ngpay only uses SMS to download a client / application on your phone. Once downloaded, it uses GPRS to complete your transactions -- so I don't think security is an issue on ngpay. In fact, the client gives a very nice user experience over SMS where you have to memorize different codes, etc.

Netcore offers a very good free SMS service for updates on latest news, movies, astro, tips and so on. The website is mytoday.com
Go to the SMS section for subscribing to all services you like. The SMS carries small ads also so they can make money on this service.

sms though having its advantages has inherent weaknesses on security & delivery aspects, thought the uses are many but limited for transactions. An application which has been mentioned in your column ngpay is a gprs based transaction platform. Both secure & simple I have tried it is useful & very convenient in todays busy lifestyle.

While NetCore solution is good, cheaper and effective to the extent of receiving messages, it still needs to be like a true BB Service but provide it for the same cost.

It is insane to expect Indian customers to pay anything more than Rs 150 for unlimited messaging (Text/Email/MMS) for a month. Only spoiled corporate brats who want to flaunt their gadgets and pretending like working where cost is bourn by the company, will use Black berry services.

For India NetCore is the best solution provided they make the email push real email sooner than later while keeping the cost as low as possible plus provide reply to email features more friendly

Looks like there is a bug in the Messaging portion of Tech2. If you post your feedback in the first page, it is able to register but if you navigate to second or third pages of the news item and post your views, it does not register!

May be time to fix the bug!!!!

I am using this NetCore Email services Rs 999 for one year plan. Seems to be reasonable but eventually it must replace BB with their full fledged functionalities at cheaper rates.

In my opinion, no sane person would spend Rs 900+ per month for sending and receiving emails through their mobiles which is being charged for BB or similar services.

Some rich corporate brats who have less work to do, prefer this methods of doing work. I dont understand how it can improve productivity of employees? It can only pretend people like working while and screw up their personal life.
