iPod nano Vs Sony Walkman NWZ-A726
By: Laiq Qureshi   |   Oct 02, 2008

Rather than bore you with preliminaries, I think I'll dive right into our shootout of the week. We shall pit the iPod Nano against the Sony Walkman NWZ-A726. We shall compare the design, features, performance, and price. For detailed reviews of the two players, click here and here.

Design

The iPod nano comes with a 2-inch (diagonal) screen and an aluminum-and-glass body, while the Sony Walkman boasts a larger 2.4 QVGA LCD.

The overall design scheme for both is pretty up to date, but the iPod is slightly sleeker with a new thinness and affected curve that you will like. However, Sony hasn't done too badly either; it's given the NWZ-A726 a shiny glass front. Both come with a proprietary USB interface, which sucks.

The iPod navigation is better in many ways, thanks to the drop-down menu system that complements the click wheel. The Sony NWZ-A726 features a five-way navigation pad which is pretty responsive too, only there’s nothing new to offer. We timed the start-up times of the two players, and guess what... it was a draw.

I would say design is obviously Apple's strength. It's always delivered snazzy products, and the iPod is no exception. But then the Sony player has a form factor that's highly practical.

the apple ipod is a standard mp3 player.it has decent sound but has plethora of downsides like no drag n drop,no fm,no equalizer, poor battery life.....sony still leaves the apple in the dust.sony has a richer sound, better bass, high quality buds, noise cancelation,fm,various sound enhancements and obviously its a much better brand.BUY A SONY N U ll 4GET APPLE I WOULD SAY.....BUY AN IPOD ONLY IF U HAV a GIRLFRIEND WHO IS MORE INTERESTED IN UR IPOD THAN U.....

This is clearly a biased review in sony's favour. Brand, Music Quality, Style Quotient, Durability.... All point towars Apple. I have a iPod 2 years old works perfectly fine and its battery life is also good, still today.
Bottom Line: Apple Rocks.

I tune is a great pain.. it doesn't mean using only this software but also on the same machine.. ep630s are good but then y do you spend extra (even I use them) and nobody can beat Sony for their battery life and Sound quality - much better than iPod's only downside is the 4gb memory.. but with drag n drop u can plug it to any machine and replace the songs.. No hassle of iTunes great relief..

i have non itunes purchased songs on my nano as well as on my itunes.. but the genius works fine.. did you try it?

reasons to go for the ipod -
1. if you cant stand itunes, you can use free plugins for winamp and windows media player to sync it your pc, with all functionalities.
2. if you dont like the ipod earphones, just get the ep630s from creative. the audio will be BETTER than sony walkmen. (first hand experience). the 630s cost 900 bucks, and the VFM will still be better considering the nano will have twice the memory.
and btw, you can find the 4g nano for about 8699 on the net, with everything necesary included. so, in the end , despite a few quirks, the nano wins. please think b4 giving opinions to non techsavvy ppl, they might make the wrong choice bcoz of you.
and i might have given the walkman a look if it went up to 8gb, really silly of sony.

Mr Reviewer!
Sony USB is proprietary whereas the nano USB is not?
Please compare properly - I know the ipod cables are more frequent, but its not the same

The reviewer missed out on the battery aspect. Anyway, in my opinion, an MP3 player must first do the primary aspects properly. It must sound good, videos and photos must be rendered properly. The flashy aspects come next. Also, from personal experience, i can say that you would get bored after a few months using these flashy gimmicks. Hence think twice before choosing the players. My bet is on Sony.
