Cheaper High-End Mobiles
By: Shayne Rana   |   Jun 12, 2008

In this age of mobile wizardry, anything is possible. You could watch TV on your mobile, use two SIM cards simultaneously, and still walk away with no dent in your wallet. While mobile phones also have a fair share of knock-offs, or 'clones' as we like to call them, there are plenty of handsets that aren’t clones and yet deliver in the features department. We know these as the nameless ‘Chinese Mobiles’. I managed to get hold of some and tested them for you.

I may not be able to give you too much by way of detail about the handsets themselves, but I can tell you what they essentially offer and how good they are. Those of you who aren’t aware of their prices (which is unlikely since they’ve pretty much flooded the market) please listen up. All the handsets I've tested in this feature are priced under Rs 10,000 (they range anywhere between Rs 5,500 and Rs 9,000).

V323

The V323 mobile is a rather bulky handset and heavy too. But it has a superbly clear 3-inch touchscreen display that’s great for watching videos and TV, if you have the reception. The interface looks identical to Nokia Symbian interface handsets, so navigation should be easy for Nokia users... or just about anybody. The interface is a little bit slow though. The phone supports analog TV, but unfortunately I couldn’t get decent reception anywhere and all I saw was a lot of static.

The V323 comes equipped with a 1.3MP camera (with plenty of settings) and the image quality isn’t too bad. There various features, including a pretty good media player and an FM radio, in addition to regular stuff like a converter, calendar for schedules and appointments etc. The best thing about the V323 is that it supports dual SIM cards, both GSM. It’s a bit tricky figuring out messaging and calling the numbers stored on the SIMs, but poking around helps. Both SIMs are simultaneously active and incoming calls from the second SIM will simply have a ‘(2)’ attached to the callers name. You can switch off either SIM if you wish. The V323 also supports external memory.

TV01

If you thought the iPhone was the big daddy of cell phones, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. I’m not referring to the handset in technological terms and calling it that, but more in terms of its size, especially with its external battery pack that includes an additional speaker. It’s unfortunate that the company that designed this handset with the external additional pack has given those annoying individuals who play their mobile music in the train some rather heavy artillery.

This handset also supports analog TV with pretty good pickup. Don’t expect to get crystal clear reception, but the image quality is okay and so is the sound. The external pack has a little stand to prop up the handset. The TV01 supports dual SIM cards too, but as far as I could tell, both are not simultaneously active, though there is a dedicated button to switch between the two. This handset has a large touchscreen interface that supports quite a high resolution. The interface is quite catchy and easy to navigate, with the five-way nav-pad or the stylus. Feature-wise the TV01 is quite well equipped with multimedia, a 1.3MP camera and the relevant features that all mobile handsets come with including alarms, calendar, notes etc. External memory is supported via microSD cards.

Always look for SAR information. Unless it is approved by FCC or suitable regulatory authorities (I mean, outside India - In India authorities have no clue on what is happening beyond making money).

We dont know if it is harmful or not.

any idea???
Ajay Sharma @ Jun 22, 2008
Hi,I have been using these Chinese mobiles for a while. The standard features are 2 batteries,USB cable, cheap ear phones. These doesn't support java games or applications. The only thing is they are very cheap. I would advice if u dont want games or applications then go for it. The music on these phones are pretty loud and sounds ok. The touch screen is pretty ok. The touch screen stopped working in 1 mobile(Its a N95 clone). The other one is anycool T818. Its been with me for 4 months its works fine. Just do a research before buying these phones. Also mind that there is NO warranty for these mobiles.
Chandu @ Jun 22, 2008
I AM ALSO USING THIS CHINESE MOBILE THOUGH NOT ON A REGULAR BASIS, AND I AM EVEN THINKING TO BUY A NEW ONE LIKE TV01 OR V323. BUT I WANT TO KNOW WHETHER THERE ARE SETTING S AVAILABLE FOR GPRS AS WELL AS MMS WITH EITHER VODAPHONE, BSNL OR AIRTEL

Looking for a dual SIM (CDMA + GSM) phone, preferably with PC-Sync capabilities. Yulong 768 seems good product. Anyone help me on where I can pick up such phones in India?
Sushil Marda @ Jun 21, 2008
i am using a dongi.. 680 for the last 6 months and it is very good. its gsm+cdma.
dk @ Jun 21, 2008
these mobiles have no warranty and they use cheaper material and software also not available on net.
gopinath @ Jun 21, 2008
Though I have not used it myself, sounds like a good option for people who want PDA but at almost 30% of the cost of branded ones, sometimes even more than that.

Flipside:
1. No WiFi in any of these models.
2. Not sure about A2DP - Bluetooth and Bluetooth serial port connection
3. No third party software available
4. No QWERTY keyboard
5. No Support - thogh it is promissed that it can be serviced in certain places

But the positive is, it is cheap and if it works for one year, then rest of all is bonus for you.
Amar @ Jun 20, 2008
These mobiles are just waste.
Anoop @ Jun 18, 2008

I have been using a Chinese Twin SIM phone for the last 7 months, and the beauty is that both SIMs work simultaneously....I am looking for the chinese iPhone clone, I have seen it on sale on eBay but not in any of the shops....
By the way who ever thinks that the original iPhone is going to release in India for Rs.8,500 is living in dreamland.....in the US its releasing for $199, along with a 2 Yr FIXED contract with the mobile provider......according to me it should debut at around Rs. 20,000 or more.......
Vik @ Jun 16, 2008

Annkur @ Jun 13, 2008
I too bought a Chinese mobile which doesn't have any name on the set. Its a dual sim card phone and a 3 MP camera and loaded with many features like usb connectivity (& charging also), bluetooth, FM, extra battery, etc,. I have started using this for the past 1 month and find it exciting. I have explored all the features and the battery life too seems good enough. For my normal use i charge the battery every 2 and half days and the talktime too seems decent enough (4hrs). The photos are good enough and the sound is simply superb and is very loud. In the past 1 month i didn't experience anything bad with this phone. We can receive calls from the two sim cards. On the flip side, no guarantee, no instruction manual is provided. I regularly use N73ME. But this chinese phone is good enough also
