Unplug Yourself

Independence - This very innocuous sounding word is probably one of the most cherished human emotions and expressions that exist today. It signifies a freedom from the yokel of oppression, depression or anything that stifles a person right to existence, creativity or just the freedom to express one self. As we as a nation today, celebrate our 60th year of freedom, let’s remember the immeasurable sacrifice that was made by people 60 years ago, that allows us to live in the freedom that we take so much for granted now days.

Let’s move on from our serious note to a more light-hearted topic. One of the most annoying parts of owning a PC today is the wires. Everywhere you turn there is a wire… waiting to entangle you in its grasp and send you airborne? If that scenario is not occurring, you will find that your existing peripherals wire is too short and causes you to sit in a hunched up position that is guaranteed to cause a body cramp or worse, some kind of permanent damage? How about just listening to your MP3 collection at the volume you want to listen at, but in a different room without someone asking you to turn the volume down.

Well, while we are at least a few generations still removed from the day, when we can completely eliminate wires from our PCs, we decided to compile a few products that will help you achieve some degree of wireless freedom.

Here is our list:

Wi-Fi Router: Linksys WRT54G.

It never ceases to amaze us, at the number of readers who still write in asking on how they can network their two PCs but without spending too much on Ethernet wiring. We have even had one enterprising gentleman who got our telephone number and called up enquiring “How much will it cost me to hire you guys to network up my house?”

Well there is a very simple answer to this very vexing question. Don’t bother with Ethernet wiring. The answer lies in using Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi as a standard has now been in existence for quite a few years. It has found mass acceptance, with even mobile phones now beginning to support the technology. It now comes inbuilt with some strong security measures in the form WPA/WPA2, extensive reach and is very easy to setup.

The product that we recommend here is the Linksys WRT54G. This router has pretty much come to define the term “Wi-Fi”. Its ease of use, sturdiness and reliability and extensive customization via an easily available open-source project (DD-WRT) makes it the perfect candidate for our choice of an entry –level Wi-Fi router.
