Economic Structure
To build/repair structures or buy advanced units, each team needs a steady flow of gold. On each map of Savage 2 there are multiple mines that can be controlled by either team. The more mines your team controls, the more income it gains, making it more likely to win. As you might have guessed, controlling mines is the key to success in Savage 2. No matter which class of units you play, ensure that you work with your teammates to attack an enemy mine or defend your own when required. The less gold your enemy has, the less chances they have of building defensive structures or advanced units, making it easier for your team to take their command center down.
Combat
Savage 2 focuses on melee combat, so if you don’t like getting up, close and personal, you’re going to have a tough time enjoying this game. There are ranged attacks in the game, but they’re only a way of softening the enemy before engaging in melee combat. The combat lays emphasis on timing your attacks, blocking incoming blows, and interrupting the enemy while they’re blocking. It’s a little tough to get used to, and when you just start playing, you’ll rely more on luck rather than skill and will probably get owned quite badly. Keep at it though and you’ll get the hang of things in good time.
If somehow you get tired of getting slaughtered initially, stick with your teammates while in combat and attack the same target they do; no matter how bad you are, if an enemy has to face two opponents its always more difficult to block and interrupt, giving you the upper hand. If you get saturated with the combat, you can even spawn as a healer once your team builds the required structures (we’ll discuss this in more detail in our next guide), so that you can stay at the back of the pack and support your teammates.
This basic overview should help you get acquainted with the very basics of the game, so you can at least dive into the action and know what the hell is going on around you. Stay tuned for our next guide that will explain things in more detail...
