Portable Hard Drive Buying Guide

As the world gets more and more digitized, our data storage demands are constantly increasing. In fact, pen drives have almost become an indispensable part of our daily digital lifestyle. But pen drives normally come in sizes of 1, 2 and 4GB. You also have pen drives with 8 and 16GB but these are exponentially expensive. For example, a 2GB pen drive is available for around Rs. 900 but an 8GB pen drive or thumb drive will set you back by at least Rs. 6,000.

So what do you do when you want to copy all your favorite movies from your friends computer, but face the space constraint? You have an extremely worthy alternative in the form of an external laptop hard drive. A laptop hard drive when coupled with an external enclosure, connects to a computer using a USB port. It’s instantly recognized as a removable device and you don’t have to install any drivers (unless you are using Windows 98, wherein you will have to install the USB drivers). You can then use the laptop hard drive as you normal desktop hard drive by moving or accessing data.

Why do we need an enclosure and why are we using a Laptop Hard Drive?
The enclosure, as the name suggests provides a cover for the hard drive. Besides that it has the interface that converts IDE (the interface used by the Drive) to USB.

You can buy external portable harddisk hdd at cochin in itnet infocom kerala 80 gb/120 gb and 160 GB available

i am using Toshiba Satellite L35 series laptop with 80 GB hard ddisk.now i want to upgrade it to 160 GB. pls suggest me which on is better either to buy 80GB external hard disk or otherwise replacing it with 160 GB internal hard disk.

Recently I passed through Singapore duty free but the only reason I did not pickup this device because they were offering me only local warrantly. Can you tell me where to pickup the Hitachi 80GB drive with Vantec's NexStar 3 enclosure in New Delhi. Also is it available for Rs 4750-?

Excellent advice for users. I really appreciate your effort. I was searching for a pen drive like solution for portable storage but storage capacity is a bottleneck and its expensive also!
