Diwali may be the festival of lights, but as I see it it’s also the festive season for plenty of sounds. I’m sure you know what I mean, what with all the firecrackers going off like it's a war zone. I have a great solution for those of you who find all this brouhaha a bit too loud for your tastes. Yes, I'm referring to MP3 players, which are a great way to drown out outside sounds. Here are some recommended players that you can either gift someone on this auspicious day or just buy for yourself – within a price range of Rs 5000.
Creative Zen Stone
This unique MP3 player, because of its name and shape, could easily be mistaken for a salt or pepper dispenser if left on a dining table. According to the brochures and the general idea and simplicity behind the design, it’s ideal for kids (maybe not teens, but a little younger). It’s available in blue and pink and comes with a built-in speaker and two separate earphone sockets so two people can use it simultaneously. There’s no display and no internal memory. You’ll need to use an MMC/SD card. The company provides a 512MB card with the player, so that’s a plus. It needs no charging as it uses a single AAA battery, but you can hook it up to the PC for transferring files to the card, via mini-USB. It’s priced at Rs 2,190.
Philips GoGear SA1355
The SA1355 is a sleek player that is also equipped with a built in voice recorder and an FM radio. It’s also extremely lightweight, so it's very easy to carry around. Since it has a 3.5mm earphone socket, you’re free to use earphones of your choice although the bundled earphones are quite good. The best part is it has a built-in USB port, though Philips has been kind enough to provide a small extension if you so require. There are EQ presets and a manual graphic EQ so you can customize the sound as you like. You can also record from the FM radio. The SA1355 is available in a 1GB model for Rs 2,100.
