Digital Audio Players (DAPs) are not just a trend these days; they seem to be a necessity for the regular commuter. True, your mobile phone could handle the chore, but there are plenty of people who not only find it cheaper but also easier to carry a small music player. Here’s my list of top five 1GB DAPs for those who don’t need to carry their entire music collection with them; just their favorite tunes.
Apple iPod Shuffle – Rs 2350
What I find most appealing about the iPod Shuffle is the design. Having a player that resembles a clip (and is conveniently designed to be used that way while playing) is a great concept. I have to hand it to the designers. Of course, you have to understand that the Shuffle is a very basic player with no frills whatsoever, just a simple navigation pad for skipping tracks and increasing or decreasing the volume. It also has Apple's proprietary charging / USB port for connecting it to a PC or a portable charger.
Creative Zen Stone – Rs 1350
Like the Shuffle this is also a faceless audio player – and by that I mean the lack of any kind of display. However, the Zen Stone takes it step further with an option of skipping folders as well as tracks, and a standard mini USB port with file drag and drop. But it lacks a convenient carry option. Don’t get me wrong; the Zen Stone has plenty of accessories, from little clip cases to loops that fit round your neck or can be used as a keychain. The navigation is similar to the Shuffle with a round five-way nav-pad.
Sandisk Clip – Rs 2990
The Clip is a small neat-looking player with a tiny display and a five-way nav-pad. It comes with a host of features, including an FM radio with recording and a separate voice recorder. Like most other MP3 players it also has an EQ with presets and a five-band manually adjustable graphic EQ. The Clip claims to give up to 15 hours of non-stop audio, which is quite impressive. It comes with a convenient clip attachment. For data transfer the Clip supports USB 2.0.
