Watch Full-Resolution Movies on Your PSP
By: Gagan Gupta   |   May 04, 2007

Now that Sony Computer Entertainment has finally realized that movie UMDs are not going to sell as well as they had hoped, they recently (and finally) released a firmware update that allows users to view videos encoded at full resolution.

So even though the PSP was already an excellent portable entertainment system, the full resolution videos add a whole new level of quality to the otherwise stretched videos that users had to make do with. But there was still one small problem—Sony didn't launch any video encoder to convert videos to full resolution.

But what Sony left out, independent developers were quick to fill in. And now, through this guide and the use of some excellent freeware, you should be able to watch movies, the way they were meant to be seen on your PSP. But first, here's what you'll need.

Hardware:

Sony PSP (PlayStation Portable)
If you don't have one yet, and you've still read the guide this far, you must have the patience of a Jedi. Make sure the firmware of your PSP is version 3.03 or above.

1 GB Memory Stick Pro Duo
Full-resolution movies can go anywhere between 500MB to over 900 MB in size, so this is a minimum requirement. It's better if you have 2 GB, so you can store more movies as well as keep the rest of your data on a single stick.

USB Data Cable
Or a memory card reader for the memory stick pro duo. Anything that can transfer the data to your PSP.

Software:

Winnydows Xvid4PSP (v4.113 used for this guide)
The video encoder, or the software that makes the magic happen. You can get it in our downloads section here.

Microsoft Framework 2.0-3.0
Essential APIs required to run Xvid4PSP. Click here to download it if you haven't already installed it.

FFDShow
For those essential video codecs. You can find this one right here.

I've tried MANY programs to convert videos for my PSP, most of which seem to use one version of ffmpeg or another to do the job. Many are just plain lousy.

3GP is actually quite good and has many profiles for the PSP for various levels of quality vs. file size. It even generates the stupid filenames and corresponding thumbnails. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get it to do full-resolution yet.

This xvid4psp program can give you full res, and generate thumbnails for you, and you should put them in \videos dir. Set the encoder to 1-pass Turbo for faster completion. Also, PAY ATTENTION to that screen shot above that has non default settings.

3gp/mobilehackrz is so much faster than this program that I'm not sure the hi-res is worth the extra hassle

Or you could just update ur psp to 3.4 OE-A. For those who don't know what it is. It is custom firmware made by some guy name dark_alex. You need to have your psp at firmware 1.5 to do this though. But if you have anything 3.03 and under you can downgrade it.

All the converting worked and everything and it says the new file is MP4, but when i move it over to my PSP...it says the file isn't recognizible....help!?

I get what you're saying. But the PSP has an excellent screen, that makes images look crisp and sharp. And since 480x272 is the native screen resolution, videos underscaled to fit perfectly in that resolution works really well.

720x576 will look good on a TV because its a resolution TVs are built to support. On a PSP, where the native resolution is comparatively lower, having a higher resolution video will make absolutely no difference as it will be downsized to fit PSP's native resolution anyways.

Like I said, don't be a resolution junkie and take a look at a PSP playing a video at its native resolution (UMD or encoded using this tecnique). You'll get why it's totally worth it.

when can I expect my PSP to arrive, so that I can see movies in it :P

Wait... I am having a tubelight memory Flash...
I do remember seeing a video on the PSP for the first time(Oct 27th, i even remember the date :P ) It sure was drooling good.

But after hearing that it was in something at a lower res It made me think they were bad :P

Its like you go at 100KMPH in a car and feel the thrill.. but after sometime when you here that the car goes till 200KMPH (metaphorically speaking) it makes you think that you were on a tricycle ride the last time :P

Forget the numbers. Watch a full resolution movie on the PSP unit itself and then tell me if you still don't think its up to that mark.

'Nuff Said! :)
Gagan Gupta @ May 06, 2007
High Quality DVD Movies are a Resolution of 720 × 576 (576 P )
where as the PSP Screen has max Resolution support of 480×272

and If movies before were at lower resolution than THAT... OMG that must have been really bad!
The Videos still wont be completely at DVD quality.
