Totally Touch Screen Mobiles: Part I
By: Shayne Rana   |   Mar 08, 2008

If you're a mobile maniac like me, you too would be bored by old-fashioned ways to input information into your mobile devices, such as using a (ugh) keypad. As I witnessed firsthand in our nation’s capital only a few days ago at Mobile Asia 2008, this year’s theme is Next-Gen Technology. From what I gathered, touch-sensitivity seems to be the hot new trend, so I decided to compile a list of phones with this technology. In this first part I’ve chosen phones that use nothing but touchscreen technology as a data input/navigation method. No keypads here – at least, not the physical button kind.

Apple iPhone – 8GB (Rs 21,750), 16GB (Rs 29,000)

Apple’s legendary iPhone is truly a marvel in modern mobile technology, with its superbly large 3.5 inch touch-sensitive display with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels and 16 million colors. Just the fact that the display is touch-sensitive isn’t enough; it’s not like that’s a revolutionary concept, but the iPhone also incorporates Multi-Touch as an input method and has an accelerometer sensor that automatically rotates the display according to how the device is held. It comes equipped with connectivity options like Bluetooth, USB (proprietary), EDGE and Wi-Fi support and multimedia diversity in the form of an iPod-like video and media player and a 2 megapixel camera. Google Maps and a YouTube browser are preloaded. The iPhone comes in three versions: 4GB, 8GB and now 16GB. The initial release of the iPhone left a lot to be desired, but with the latest firmware version things are looking up.

Samsung F490 – Launching in May (Approx. Rs 29,000)

The F490 doesn’t have a keypad; but then that’s why it’s included in part one of this feature. It relies on its 3.3 inch touchscreen display. It has a resolution of 240 x 420 pixels and 256K colors. Like the iPhone, it has a 3.5mm earphone socket and a decent video and audio player. There's a 5 megapixel camera with flash, and a secondary camera for video calling (since it supports 3G). It also has HSDPA, Bluetooth with A2DP, and USB support. In case you need more than the existing 100MB of internal space, it also supports microSD cards.

Now listen VeeDee, dashdash has a really good point and you just cant be jealous of it (you probably weren't) but since the day i bought the iPod touch, i have been crying out loud for not opting for a windows mobile. yes, windows mobile does put you in the boss' place; in case of iPhone, the boss is the Phone, you can not personalize it. moreover let me know if there is one feature which a good windows phone lack but the iPhone doesn't. the truth is that iPhone is a crap and so are many overhyped products. i am not biased but truly think of it before you type me an insulting reply here.

Dont ever buy a TOUCH Screen Phone as, after 3 months It stops Opearationg and its Really Difficult to Operate the Phone after that
jk @ Mar 21, 2008
@ dashdash, hello dude, seems like u are against touch screen phones but that does not mean you go on rambling about people who arent! And as far as the internet profile settings go, the person buying the phone must have enough common sense to buy something that they can handle!
VeeDee @ Mar 19, 2008
The Apple iPhone as of now, is not expected in India for quite a long time as there are almost no connectivity (high speed) options in India. So I suggest you go out and buy an unlocked iPhone, its well worth the price (I bought one yesterday!!!! :P )
VeeDee @ Mar 19, 2008
EXCELLENT !!

Has the HTC Touch Cruise or "Tom Cruise" as it is dubbed, been launched as yet? If yes, is it available in India and for how much?
I'm looking out to buy a "decent" PDA phone (preferably Windows Mobile 6.0) which would enable me to read pdfs, docs and spreadsheets as well as install a few apps.
What could one go for for about 20K?
Abhijit S @ Mar 14, 2008
When is iPhone launching in India? Are they really launching it or it's just a fuss?
Aman @ Mar 13, 2008
maverick_ymca has got a point here. Ever tried operating a totally touch screen mobile with one hand? It's a mess. What's the whole point of this touchscreen thing? Ease of use, right? But none of these "totally touch screen phones" facilitate the ease of use. They make your life hell. Imgaine yourself buying iPhone and then just staring at the glossy screen because you don't wanna touch it for the fear of smudging the immaculately finished screen. Go on boy, wrap it in a tissue paper, buy a cover for it - try velvet! You bought yourself a 30K piece of tech, but your friend who owns a Nokia 3310 can still send a text faster than you. People who buy crap like iPhone rarely NEED features like Wifi, EDGE, blah blah. They can't even configure their phone's internet profile.
dashdash @ Mar 13, 2008
Hi Hemant.

P1i is quite stable - atleast more than it's predecessor.
You're not gonna like the keyboard though. It's a bit awkward, and you can't type on it with ease even after a lot of practice. If you're looking for a combination of communicator and PDA, check out Nokia E61i.
dashdash @ Mar 13, 2008
Talking about PDAs, even a 3.5" screen can't accommodate a decent on-screen keyboard. What about lack of tactile response? Precision of input? It's going to get really congested if one tries to squeeze a decent keyboard in a 3.5" display, hell, even a 4" display; and even if you do manage to do that, I don't think much space would be left for typing whatever we wanna type, no? So who wants to pay >20K for a "touchscreen keyboard"? This is pretty lame! A device that incorporates a physical keyboard AND a touchscreen would be nice e.g. SE P990i and other iMate phones. It's nothing but a mere marketing gimmick. What about fingerprints? Self-cleaning displays are on the way. I'd rather wait for a nanotechnology miracle! ;-)

Kindly please respond .. thanks
Hemant @ Mar 10, 2008
the problem with touch only phones is that its very very difficult to type smses. Me being an avid messager found touch and iPhone very difficult to use and reverted back to my P990i.
