Top Three Free Antivirus
By: Jayesh Mansukhani   |   Mar 28, 2007

One of the biggest problems that our readers often complain about is the cost of commercial software in India. Thanks to the rather expensive conversion rates of foreign currency, software that would translate to being cheap abroad becomes unaffordable to the Indian consumer. Though quite a few of these prominent companies are present in the Indian market, they price their software at premium rates which again leaves the average consumer high and dry. This drives users to either living without these essential tools or to simply pirating them. While pirating is the easy way out, it's not the answer in the long run. Most software companies today have switched to an online authentication system, where the software checks back to see if it's valid or not. Since it's pirated... well you get the picture.

However all is not lost. There are a host of free programs that are available now. These programs offer virtually all the functionality that their paid counterparts have. Keeping this in mind, we at Tech2 have decided to take up the anvil on behalf of our readers. Starting from this week onwards,we will pick out and feature 3 software applications that we think represent the best in a respective category.
This week we will be tackling one of the most common and important categories i.e. Antivirus programs. Here is our pick of the best freeware AV's.

Avast!

Name:                      Avast! Home Edition
Publisher:                ALWIL Software
File Size:                 13013 kb
License:
                   Freeware
OS:                          Win (All)

Avast has been around a long time now. Founded in 1988, this free AV suite is very popular for the comprehensive set of option it offers, which includes an IM scanner, Email scanner,a P2P shield and of course your standard file scan. When you add the fact that its virus database is updated daily, a feature that is often found only in expensive commercial software you get an application that is fit for this roundup.

I read this article in HT Cafe dated 16/4/2007 on Pg. No. 16.

I've been very concerned for Computer Security. With my research I've found that there are 4 kinds of security softwares essential for the complete security of a PC. They are:

1) Anti-Virus - For virus, trojans, worms etc.
2) Anti-Spyware - For tracking cookies, spywares, adwares etc.
3) Firewall - To monitor and regulate the internet activity.
4) SiteAdvisor -To know if the site we visit is safe or not.

Avast! Anti-Virus seems to have very good set of tools as compared to the rest of two. But if you are concerned with overall security, then you must have a Firewall. Avast! has this drawback that it isn't compatible with ZoneAlarm Firewall while AVG is compatible with almost all kinds of softwares, except malicious...!

i am an avast user.the greatest advantage of it is that it automatically updates in every week with latest virus definition.so the computer remains virus free.i always recommend it to my friends.

I am using AVG anti virus since last 2 years and I found this as VERY GOOD scanner. The biggest advantage of this is 1) Good Scanner, 2) Light weight, 3) Daily Automatic Updates, 4) User Friendly.

Avast is very good. In fact, I had a licensed version of Norton on my laptop, but after the license for Norton expired in 15 months, I have replaced it with Avast. The same applies for my desktop. It is quite good.
