iPod Classic
The iPod Classic is the sixth generation of Apple’s successful media player. With the recent launch, Apple not only offers unprecedented storage capacities of 80GB and 160GB, it's also brought in a whole new look for the Classic.
Surprisingly, prices haven't shot through the roof. For once, I can call an Apple product truly affordable! Power users can pick one up for just Rs 14,500 (80GB) and Rs 20,400 (160GB). Obviously, gray market rates are something to kill for – Rs 11,250 and Rs 14,500 respectively.
The Classic features a 2.5-inch screen that supports 320 x 240 resolution, and additions like the Cover Flow feature. If you are keen on carrying your music with you, plus lot of movies, the player makes for an apt travel companion. Yes, you will need iTunes to transfer information, and no it doesn’t have a drag-and-drop option.
Creative Vision: M
A close competitor of the iPod classic, the Creative Vision: M isn't selling like hotcakes for some inexplicable reason. It deserves a place here for the unbeatable ease it offers in managing all your data in one device, plus a host of features and near-supreme performance.
To begin with, the player has a 2.5-inch screen and unlike the iPod Classic you can simply drag and drop your music. For videos, however, you will need the software bundled with the player, which also helps convert files when required. It has FM radio and offers a whole lot of features for just Rs 10,000 in the gray market.
Microsoft Zune
Although the Zune is not officially available in India, you can pick it up in the grey market. It’s not very different from the other two except that it has a couple of extra tricks up its sleeves.
For videos, however, you will need to use a third party application to convert, since it only supports WMV. The software bundled with the player will help your convert MPEG-4 files. But that’s it. It costs about Rs 11,000 at Mumbai's Heera Panna market.
