This Diwali we know a lot of you will be getting ready to splurge on gadgets such as MP3 and media players. To make life easier for you, we've compiled a list of PMPs that are worth every penny. Read on if you want to be better prepared and more aware of all the options in the market. From flash-based players to hard drive-based players, we have three in each category. Enjoy!!
Cowon is a relatively new entrant in the PMP market, and lacks visibility. I haven’t seen a single piece at any hypermarket, except Croma in Mumbai (and of course the gray market). This is a big disservice to the product. The main reason it figures in our Diwali special is due to its video playing capabilities.
It features a 2.5-inch, 24-bit QVGA (320 x 240) TFT-LCD touchscreen that can display up to 16 million colors. It supports MP3, OGG, WMA, FLAC, WAV and APE for music, but for video you will need to convert files using the proprietary software. It takes a little time but once it’s done you can enjoy movies with theatrical sound. It also reads text files, and comes with an FM radio and voice recorder too.
What you will love is the touchscreen feature. This eases things a bit (no fast-forwarding; simply tap on the progress bar). It comes with a stylus that can be used to prop the player up at two reclining angles. It comes in 2GB and 4GB capacities that cost Rs 10,750 and Rs 12,750 respectively.
iPod Touch
We all know by now that the iPod Touch has broken all barriers in the way a player should interact with the user. I’m thoroughly convinced that if there’s a clear favorite you can gift this Diwali, don’t think twice – the iPod Touch is just the thing.
The Touch features a 3.5-inch multi-touch display that offers a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels at 163 pixels per inch. You can view pictures, watch movies, or listen to music in true iPod fashion. Add some features like Cover Flow and ‘flick’ motion technology, and your experience gets that much richer.
The Touch looks just like the iPhone, only without a phone and camera. Also it’s a bit slimmer. It comes in 8GB and 16GB, and costs Rs 17,000 and Rs 23,000. But in the grey market the 8GB costs around Rs 13,000.
aigo E868
This is a new entrant in the market. It has a 2.5 inch 16 million color LTPS display that occupies the front. It supports AVI (DivX) , VOB, DAT, MPG, MPEG, MP4, MP3, WMA, and OGG formats.
With the aigo you need not bother with conversion applications in most cases; it plays almost anything you throw at it. Another great feature is the AV-out option (RCA AV cables provided). You can also change the TV Standard from PAL60 to PAL or NTSC. It’s priced at Rs 11,200, so if you like it, go for it.
