AI for payments: How UPI could soon work via AI agents for users

AI agents are the hot thing in the market and we could soon have them making UPI payments on your behalf. A new report suggests the authorising body behind UPI is looking to build a system where AI agents can be summoned to make small value transactions on UPI and you don’t even need to authenticate them. The details quoted by Reuters suggests NPCI is preparing the framework that will make AI operate within the UPI ecosystem for the consumers.

Multiple reports cite the prospect of AI agents operating payments in UPI. Allowing low-value transactions to go through AI seems like the right decision with lower risk attached and also giving AI enough room to train and improve its performance in the long run.
How AI to make UPI payments
The report says UPI’s protocol will use UPI Circle and Reserve Pay to fool-proof the AI agents while making these digital payments. With the former, you can authorise someone else to make payments, while the Pay feature lets you block a select amount that can be accessed by the AI agents.
UPI is one of the biggest payment modes in the Indian market with billions sent between people and even shop sellers. We have seen the system bring features like UPI Lite that doesn’t need a PIN, or making payments via biometric support on your phones.
But bringing AI agents to UPI felt like an inevitable episode in the digital payment story but there is a lot needed to be done behind the scenes before we actually have AI running accounts for people without them fearing further lapses.
