Google Expands AI Search Advertising To India As It Looks To Turn AI-Powered Search Into A New Revenue Opportunity

Google is expanding advertisements within its artificial intelligence-powered search experience to more international markets, including India, as the company looks to build new revenue opportunities around its growing AI products.
The move comes as Google increasingly integrates generative AI into its search engine, changing how users discover information, research products and interact with online content.

The company announced the expansion of advertisements in AI Mode on October 28, 2026. The new markets include India, Australia, Canada, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore.
The expansion is part of Google’s broader strategy to introduce advertising into AI-powered search experiences rather than relying exclusively on conventional search results and sponsored links.

AI Mode allows users to ask more detailed questions and receive conversational responses generated using artificial intelligence. Instead of entering multiple short searches, users can describe what they want in greater detail and ask follow-up questions to refine the results.
Google says queries in AI Mode are, on average, three times longer than traditional search queries. This provides the company with opportunities to introduce advertising that is more closely connected to the context of a user’s question.
According to Shashi Thakur, Google’s vice president and general manager of Search Ads and Ads on Google Experiences, the company is expanding its AI Mode advertising experience to additional countries.
Google said its internal research showed that users were comfortable with advertisements in AI Mode and considered them relevant. It also reported that click-through rates for sponsored product listings were similar to those for organic product listings within the AI experience.
The company has said that advertisements will be clearly marked as sponsored content.
Google is also experimenting with advertisements that can appear during follow-up queries in AI Mode. This feature, known as multiturn ads, is being introduced in the United States.
The expansion comes at an important time for Google’s advertising business. During Alphabet’s third-quarter earnings announcement, the company reported revenue of $127.6 billion, representing year-on-year growth of 25%.
However, Google Search advertising revenue grew 12% year-on-year in the third quarter, compared with 17% in the second quarter and 19% in the first quarter.
The figures indicate a slowdown in the growth rate of its traditional search advertising business, increasing the importance of developing new monetisation opportunities around AI-powered products.
Google executives have argued that AI is changing the way people use Search, with longer and more complex queries becoming increasingly common. The company is therefore looking to make its AI experiences commercially sustainable while continuing to expand their capabilities.
For Indian users, the expansion means advertisements are becoming part of Google’s evolving AI search experience. It could also create new opportunities for businesses and advertisers looking to reach consumers through conversational search.
However, the development raises questions about how advertising will influence AI-generated recommendations and whether users will be able to clearly distinguish sponsored suggestions from organic information.
For publishers and digital marketers, Google’s move is another indication that the economics of online search are changing. As AI becomes a bigger part of the search experience, businesses may need to rethink how they attract audiences and generate traffic.
