Google says the Halo will, “make your agent’s status visible.” This sounds a lot like the access notification you see when any app on the phone uses the mic or camera.

AI agents will be handling the tasks on devices and Gemini will be at the forefront of these changes, Google probably wants to keep users informed about how these agents will operate and not just let them do their job quietly. “This means you can see the agent’s progress right from the top of any screen you’re on, without having to stop what you're doing,” Google explains the whole point of the Halo in this post.
These agents are not new anymore but the amount of data and tracking required to make them work can be invasive. For instance, to get the AI agent to control your emails and files, you will need to give AI the access to your Gmail account, the Docs files and other private content which you have kept away from the prying eyes of the technology till date.
Any sort of convenience brings its own challenges and Google feels that having Halo flashing in front of your eyes will ease those worries and give them more room to grow and get more people to truly experience the AI world.
Android Halo will work with the new Gemini Spark agents and supported on devices that can run Gemini Intelligence which means limited to the premium range initially when it rolls out later this year.
