OpenAI Rolls Out Images 2.6 With Faster Generation And GIF Creation In ChatGPT

OpenAI has launched Images 2.6 across ChatGPT, Codex and its API, bringing faster image generation, improved editing controls and a new ability to create animated GIFs.
The company says Images 2.6 can generate images up to 50% faster than its previous model while offering users greater control over visual elements. One of the biggest additions is the ability to turn still images into short, looping GIF animations.

The GIF feature can be used for a range of creative tasks, including animating brand mascots, producing social media reactions, creating memes and preparing animated storyboards before moving to full video production. Users can also start with simple sketches and turn them into animated characters.
OpenAI says users worldwide now generate around 4 billion images every week through ChatGPT, Codex and its API. That works out to an average of more than 500 million images per day.

Images 2.6 is also designed to improve consistency when creating professional visuals such as advertisements, posters and product images. The model is intended to maintain the appearance of characters, products and brand elements across multiple edits.
For developers using the API, OpenAI is offering two versions of the model: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst.
Flare is aimed at faster image generation and can reportedly produce an image in as little as six seconds when used with the lowest quality setting. Sunburst is focused more heavily on output quality and consistency, particularly when medium or high-quality settings are selected.
The API update also introduces additional controls for image generation and editing. Developers can use image markup to specify particular areas that need to be changed, while SVG export allows generated designs to be used in websites, applications and print projects.
A new complexity setting also gives developers control over how much planning the model applies when handling an image-generation or editing request.
OpenAI Images 2.6 is available globally in ChatGPT and Codex across subscription tiers on desktop, mobile and the web. GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and Sunburst are available through the API.
With the update, OpenAI is positioning its image-generation technology not just as a tool for creating individual pictures, but as a broader platform for editing, animation and professional visual workflows.
