Snapchat's Snap Map Now Shows What Your Friends Are Listening To in Real Time

Snap Map has always shown where your friends are. Now it’ll show what they’re listening to as well. Snapchat launched Now Playing on July 27, a new feature that turns the map into a live feed of friends’ Spotify activity, and it’s rolling out starting today wherever both apps are already available.

Once you link a Spotify account, either through Snap Map, Sounds, a friend’s profile, or Settings, your current track can appear next to your presence on the map. Anyone with permission to see it can tap the track card to jump straight into Spotify, save the song to their Liked Songs, or browse Spotlight videos built around the same audio. That save option isn’t limited to the map either, songs discovered through Spotlight or Snapchat’s Sound Pages can also be added directly to a linked Spotify library.
Snap’s head of music, Manny Adler, framed the update around connection rather than just discovery: “Music is one of the most personal ways people express themselves, and it becomes even more meaningful when it brings friends closer. Now Playing adds a new layer of expression and discovery to Snap Map, helping Snapchatters share the soundtrack to their day and find new music through the people they already know.”

Privacy controls
Snap has built in four visibility settings: Friends, Friends on the Map, Select Friends, or No One. Worth noting, the feature only ever shows a live, current track, not a listening history or your last-played song, so nobody can dig through what you’ve listened to previously.
Sharing also isn’t permanent by default. It stays active only while you’ve opened Snapchat within the past 24 hours; go quiet longer than that and sharing pauses automatically until you open the app again. Users can also manually pause sharing for three hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely, whenever they’d rather keep their listening private.
Where it’s live, and what’s next
Now Playing is rolling out immediately in any region where both Snapchat and Spotify operate, with Canada set to join a little later. Spotify is the only supported service for now, though Snap has signalled the integration could expand to other streaming platforms down the line.
This builds on a feature Snapchat has had running since 2020, called Sounds, which lets users add short licensed music clips to Snaps and Stories, with links out to the full track on Spotify, Apple Music, or SoundCloud. Now Playing takes that a step further, moving beyond music tied to individual posts and turning ongoing listening itself into something friends can see and act on directly through the map. Snap says the map itself reaches more than 450 million people a month, giving this integration a considerably larger built-in audience than a standalone music feature would normally launch with.
