OpenAI has issued an advisory for macOS users, asking them to update the ChatGPT desktop app before May 8, 2026. The company said older versions of ChatGPT, along with related tools such as Codex, Codex CLI, and Atlas, will stop functioning after the deadline. The move is linked to a security issue involving a third-party software component used in earlier builds.

What caused the issue

The disruption stems from a compromised JavaScript library known as Axios. OpenAI said a threat actor gained access to a maintainer’s system and inserted malicious code into certain versions of the library. These affected versions were briefly available before being removed.

While the company stated there is no evidence that user data or internal systems were accessed, it has taken precautionary action to address the risk. The response includes changes to how its macOS applications are verified and signed.

Why older apps will stop working

As part of its response, OpenAI has rotated its macOS code-signing certificates. This means apps built using older certificates will no longer be recognised as valid by the operating system. As a result, outdated versions of ChatGPT and related tools will stop working after May 8.

The change applies specifically to macOS applications and is aimed at ensuring that only updated and secure versions continue to run.

How to check and update

Users running ChatGPT Desktop or related OpenAI tools on macOS need to confirm they are using the latest version. This can be done by checking for updates within the app settings or by comparing the installed version with the latest release available from OpenAI.

If the app was installed before the recent security update or has not been updated recently, users are advised to download the latest version from the official source.

What users need to know

OpenAI clarified that no additional steps such as password resets or API key changes are required. The advisory is limited to macOS users, and apps on iOS, Android, and Windows platforms are not affected.
