WhatsApp has introduced a prepaid mobile recharge feature for users in India, enabling transactions directly within the app. The update supports major telecom operators including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi). The rollout is being conducted in phases and will reach Android and iOS users over the coming weeks.

How the feature works

With this addition, users can recharge their own number or that of others without leaving WhatsApp. The process is integrated into the app’s interface and follows a structured flow. Users need to access the new ₹ icon, select the prepaid recharge option, choose a mobile number, confirm the operator, and pick a suitable plan. Payments can be completed using UPI, debit cards, or credit cards.

The feature allows browsing of available plans within the app, removing the need to switch to external recharge platforms. Once a plan is selected, users can review details and confirm the transaction.

₹ icon as a central access point

WhatsApp has also added a dedicated ₹ icon on the home screen. This serves as a gateway for payments and related services. Apart from prepaid recharges, the section includes options for sending money, accessing UPI features, and using other services such as metro ticketing where available.

The integration brings multiple financial tools into one place, making it easier for users to manage payments within conversations or through a single dashboard.

Expansion of WhatsApp services in India

The prepaid recharge feature builds on WhatsApp’s existing offerings in India, which already include bill payments and chat-based access to services. The system is powered by PayU and reflects the platform’s effort to expand beyond messaging into transactional use cases.

By adding mobile recharges, WhatsApp aims to position itself as a multi-purpose app that combines communication with everyday utility services.
