Traditional romance scams often use stolen photographs, copied profile descriptions and generic messages. Victims may uncover them through reverse-image searches or inconsistencies in a scammer’s story.
Generative AI can make those checks less effective. A profile picture created from scratch may not appear anywhere else online, while chatbots can prepare personalised responses based on a victim’s interests, job and personal circumstances.
Scammers can also use AI to improve their language, manage several conversations and adjust their stories when questioned. Edited backgrounds and manipulated video calls may support claims about living overseas or working in a particular profession.
How the Scam Usually Develops
A fraudster typically begins by expressing strong interest and maintaining frequent contact. The conversation may quickly move from Tinder or Bumble to WhatsApp, Telegram or another private messaging service.
After building emotional trust, the scammer may introduce a medical emergency, travel expense or business problem. Others promote supposedly profitable cryptocurrency platforms or investment opportunities.
The amount requested may initially be small. Once the victim makes a payment, the fraudster can demand additional money for invented fees, taxes or account withdrawals.
Verification Badges Have Limits
Verification tools can reduce risk but do not guarantee that every detail in a profile is accurate.
Tinder’s photo-verification process compares a video selfie with profile pictures. Tinder states that its badge does not confirm other claims made by a user.
Bumble offers photo and ID verification, in-app voice and video calls, and an AI-based system designed to detect suspicious accounts. Users should still be cautious when a match refuses an in-app call, provides inconsistent information or repeatedly avoids meeting safely in person.
What Users Should Do if Money Is Requested
Never transfer money, cryptocurrency or gift cards to someone known only through a dating app. Do not install investment apps or open payment links sent by a match.
Save screenshots, profile details, phone numbers and transaction records before blocking and reporting the account on Tinder or Bumble.
Anyone who has transferred money should contact their bank immediately and call India’s cybercrime helpline at 1930. A complaint can also be filed through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
