How to download and install ChromeOS Flex on an old windows laptop

Google’s ChromeOS Flex can give an ageing Windows laptop a supported web-focused operating system, but installation erases existing files and requires careful compatibility checks before users proceed with it permanently.
Microsoft ended regular support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Extended Security Updates remain available for eligible devices, although coverage and costs vary between consumers and organisations.

For laptops that cannot run Windows 11, ChromeOS Flex offers another option. Google’s operating system focuses on web applications, cloud storage and automatic updates, but permanently installing it removes Windows and all locally stored data.

Google recommends using a model listed in its ChromeOS Flex certified-device database. The operating system may work on uncertified laptops, but stability, performance and hardware support are not guaranteed.
The laptop needs a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor, at least 4GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and support for booting from USB. Processors and graphics hardware released in 2012 or earlier are generally unsupported.
You will also need an empty USB drive with at least 8GB of storage. Creating the installer will erase everything stored on it.
Create the ChromeOS Flex USB Installer
Open Google Chrome on a working Windows, Mac or ChromeOS computer and install the Chromebook Recovery Utility extension from the Chrome Web Store.
Launch the extension and select Get Started, followed by Select a Model From a List. Choose Google ChromeOS Flex as the manufacturer and ChromeOS Flex as the product.
Insert the USB drive, select it from the menu and choose Create Now. Remove the drive after the recovery utility confirms that the installer is ready.
Boot Your Old Laptop From USB
Turn off the target laptop and insert the USB installer. Switch it on while repeatedly pressing its boot-menu key. Common options include F12 for Dell and Lenovo, F9 for HP, F2 for Acer and Delete for Asus, although the key can vary by model.
Choose the USB drive from the boot menu. If it does not appear, USB boot may need to be enabled through the laptop’s BIOS or UEFI settings.
Test ChromeOS Flex Before Installing
On the welcome screen, select Get Started and then Try It First. This runs ChromeOS Flex from the USB drive without deleting Windows.
Test the Wi-Fi, keyboard, touchpad, webcam, speakers, Bluetooth and sleep functions. If everything works, sign out and select Install ChromeOS Flex.
Back up important files and disconnect external storage before confirming. The installation permanently erases Windows, applications, settings and personal data.
ChromeOS Flex does not provide the complete Chromebook experience. Google Play and most Android apps are unavailable, while Linux support and some hardware features depend on the laptop model.
