Xiaomi used to lead the market with a clear focus, making good quality and value for money products. The Redmi Note series was part of its success in India and tried a lot to make its flagship become as popular as the other products. Now, it is bringing the Xiaomi 17T version to the country after a long break, with a fresh impetus to become a force to reckon with.

The new phone has Leica cameras in tow, keeps the performance level very much in its sights and offers a product that doesn’t look out of place in 2026. But does the Xiaomi 17T have the same appetite as the previous phones from the brand, we decided to find out.

The functional design

Xiaomi 17T is premium in some ways but you will notice some cut backs that were expected. You see the plastic frame on the edges that seems to help with keeping the phone’s weight to around 200 grams.

It does get IP68 rating for water and dust resistance but Xiaomi doesn’t make its IP69 capable of handling high-pressure water jets.

The back panel is identical to the other Xiaomi 17 models with its squarish camera module and the mix of glass with fibre wrapping up the body. The design does not scream premium but it has the right attributes to be ranked in the good looking category.

Sharp and compact

Coming from a 6.8-inch device, the 17T with its 6.59-inch AMOLED display felt extremely compact, even though it is slightly bigger than the regular 17 version. The panel offers punchy and vibrant colours. It looks sharp in general, the deep blacks are handled well being an AMOLED.

You can even switch the colour tone from the settings in case the default version isn’t that appealing to your viewing taste. You will enjoy watching videos and shows on the screen and won’t really feel uncomfortable because of it.

Reliably performs

Xiaomi has opted for the MediaTek Dimensity 8500 Ultra chipset with 12GB RAM and up to 512GB storage available. This is not the highest tier SoC from the company, but still offers flagship-like performance in most cases.

You could say that the same hardware is available on phones for around Rs 40,000 but this market is slightly different and Xiaomi chooses to prioritise other aspects of the 17T for the buyer.

The thermal levels don’t get high at any point, so the chipset does its work, and lets the cooling system handle it admirably. The benchmark scores also showed what the 17T can handle and how much load it can support for daily use, and even in the long run that should work out just fine.

The HyperOS 3 version based on Android 16 running on 17T is gradually coming to form but still feels a work in progress compared to the other OSs available in the space. The interface is smooth and working across it will have no issues but there are some aspects of the software that can be tweaked to make the experience even more fluid.

The 17T is promised to get 5 OS upgrades and 6 years of security patches which is encouraging to see. We just hope the brand can speed up these updates which has not been very positive with the previous devices.

The camera focus

The 17T has a main 50MP Sony sensor with OIS, a 50MP periscope telephoto lens with OIS and a 12MP ultrawide lens in the camera system at the back. The 5x telephoto zoom on the second lens is the big highlight of this device, and also something not easily available in this range.

The main camera can handle the details in daylight but you notice the softening parts in low light conditions. Portraits are a strong point with the cameras, especially the telephoto but even the main sensor manages to capture the details and even the skin tones to some extent.

Xiaomi 17T review

It is becoming hard to find reliable shooters in the mid-to-premium range in the market, the 17T is somewhat looking to offer itself as an option.

Charge and go

The global variant of the 17T packs a 6,500mAh battery which should be considered big enough to last a few days. Xiaomi has done well to optimise its run time, however, we still noticed that the idle battery drain was unusually higher than expected. We hope the brand can make some tweaks to improve the numbers with an update.

Xiaomi 17T review

The overall usability is quite good for most users but if you like playing games for a few hours, you will most likely have to hunt for the charger by the end of the day. And that is where the speed comes down because of the 67W charging support which is not slow per se but in the current market it takes over an hour, which is ranked as slow in comparison to other devices in its range.

If you use the phone for regular tasks that include web browsing, social media, some music and a lot of Reels, the 17T will last you long enough to avoid any battery anxiety. We just hope the efficiency can get better.

Xiaomi 17T is the brand coming to its old form, offering a device that cuts the price noise, and looks to give you a balanced package with a reliable camera on board.
