Anthropic is changing how Claude subscribers can access its Fable 5 model from July 20. Max and Team Premium members will retain access within their subscriptions, while Pro and Team Standard customers will need usage credits.

The revised arrangement follows several extensions to the model’s promotional access period. Anthropic had previously planned to move all subscription users to metered credits after the temporary inclusion ended.

Claude Max and Team Premium subscribers will be able to use Fable 5 as part of their existing plans, but only for up to 50 percent of their usage limits.
Once users exhaust their included allowance, they will need to purchase additional credits to continue using the model. Anthropic has not indicated that the change will affect access to other Claude models included with these subscriptions.
The company said demand for Fable 5 had been difficult to predict, leading it to introduce the model across subscription plans in stages while securing additional computing capacity.
Pro and Team Standard Move to Credits
Claude Pro and Team Standard subscribers will no longer receive Fable 5 usage within their regular plan limits. They will continue to access the model through separately metered usage credits.
Eligible users on these plans will receive a one-time $100 credit. Once that amount is exhausted, continued use will require additional payment based on token consumption.
Fable 5 is priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens through Anthropic’s usage-based system. Actual costs will depend on prompt length, generated output and the complexity of individual tasks.
Anthropic Moves Towards Metered Usage
The change reflects the difficulty of including compute-intensive models within fixed-price subscriptions. Power users can generate token costs substantially above their monthly subscription fees, especially when using coding agents for long-running tasks.
Anthropic has repeatedly extended Fable 5’s temporary inclusion since restoring the model globally. The new arrangement keeps it bundled with higher-priced plans while moving lower tiers towards consumption-based billing.
Additional Computing Capacity Under Discussion
Anthropic is continuing to invest in infrastructure as demand grows. Meta and Anthropic are reportedly discussing a computing-capacity lease potentially worth as much as $10 billion over two years.
Neither company has confirmed that an agreement has been completed. If finalised, the additional infrastructure could give Anthropic more capacity for training and operating its models.
Anthropic has not said whether future capacity additions could lead to another revision of the Fable 5 limits.
