A completed UPI payment cannot be cancelled automatically. Acting quickly through the payment app and bank may improve your chances of recovering the money.

Sending money to the wrong UPI ID can be stressful, particularly when the transaction shows as successful. Unlike a pending or failed payment, a successful UPI transfer cannot normally be stopped or reversed by the sender.

Recovery may still be possible, but it depends on cooperation from the recipient and the banks involved. Acting quickly and keeping complete transaction records are important.

Check the Transaction Details

Open the UPI app and confirm that the payment was successful. Note the recipient’s name, UPI ID, amount, date, transaction ID and 12-digit reference or RRN number.

Take screenshots of the transaction page, but do not share your UPI PIN, OTP or bank password with anyone. If you know the recipient, contact them politely and request a refund through a fresh UPI payment.

Do not approve a collect request or scan another QR code to “receive” the refund. Receiving money through UPI does not require entering a UPI PIN.

Raise a Complaint Through the UPI App

Open the transaction in Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM or the app used for payment. Select Help, Report a Problem or Raise a Complaint, and choose the closest available option.

NPCI states that an initiated UPI payment cannot be stopped. Some complaint systems may also offer limited support for successful person-to-person transfers, but raising a ticket creates an official record.

Save the complaint number and any response received from the app.

Contact Your Bank Immediately

Contact the bank linked to the UPI payment through its official helpline, app, email or branch. Provide the transaction ID, RRN, amount, time and recipient’s details, and clearly state that the transfer was accidental.

Ask the bank to contact the beneficiary bank and initiate a recovery request. However, the recipient’s bank generally cannot remove money from an account without the recipient’s consent or an appropriate legal direction. A complaint therefore does not guarantee repayment.

Escalate an Unresolved Complaint

If the bank rejects the complaint, gives an unsatisfactory response or does not respond within 30 days, a complaint can be filed through the RBI Complaint Management System. The RBI Ombudsman can examine deficiencies in the bank’s service, but it does not guarantee recovery of an authorised payment.

If the transfer resulted from deception rather than a typing mistake, immediately contact the bank, call the cybercrime helpline at 1930, and report the incident through India’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
