Google has announced a series of new Gemini-powered features aimed at students, researchers and educators, including AI study notebooks, advanced NotebookLM capabilities and connected classroom tools.
Google has introduced a fresh set of Gemini AI updates focused on learning, research and productivity. As part of its June AI announcements, the company unveiled new study notebooks in the Gemini app, enhanced NotebookLM capabilities and AI-powered tools for classrooms. The latest additions are designed to help users organise research, personalise learning and simplify everyday academic tasks.

The updates expand Gemini’s role beyond a chatbot, positioning it as an AI assistant for students, teachers and researchers by offering tools that can create personalised lessons, analyse documents and organise information more efficiently.

One of the biggest additions is Study Notebooks in the Gemini app. The feature allows users to upload class notes and learning material, set a study goal and take a baseline knowledge quiz. Based on the results, Gemini identifies knowledge gaps and creates personalised lessons tailored to the user’s learning pace.
The feature also tracks progress through a dedicated dashboard, allowing users to monitor improvements over time instead of relying on static notes. Google says the system adapts to individual learning styles, making revision more structured.
NotebookLM receives major productivity upgrades
Google has also upgraded NotebookLM with several new capabilities aimed at researchers and professionals.
The AI-powered notebook tool now includes advanced reasoning abilities alongside access to a secure cloud computer capable of running code. Users can also generate charts, spreadsheets and presentation slides directly from their research material.
NotebookLM can organise notes, documents and web sources into a structured research repository, helping users manage large volumes of information more effectively. According to Google, these new capabilities are available globally for Google AI Ultra subscribers and selected Google Workspace accounts.
New AI tools for teachers and classrooms
Google is also expanding Gemini’s role in education by introducing connected AI tools across Google Classroom, Chromebooks and Gemini.
Teachers can now use real classroom context securely to automate routine tasks, prepare curriculum-based activities and manage classroom workflows more efficiently. Students, meanwhile, gain access to adaptive study notebooks and free AI-powered standardised test preparation designed to support self-paced learning.
The company said these tools aim to reduce administrative work for educators while giving students more personalised academic support.
Google highlights AI research in education
Alongside the product announcements, Google shared findings from its latest education research conducted in Sierra Leone. The study explores how AI can support teaching in regions facing teacher shortages and limited educational resources.
To help educators and researchers build on the findings, Google has also released a free teacher training guide and a research playbook that outlines best practices for integrating AI into classrooms.
Availability
Study Notebooks are rolling out through the Gemini app, while the enhanced NotebookLM experience is now available globally for Google AI Ultra subscribers and eligible Google Workspace users. Google says additional education-focused AI features across Classroom and Chromebooks will continue rolling out in phases.
