And this is where the SIM Lock feature comes to your rescue. So how does SIM Lock on Android phones and what level of safety does it offer for the users? Here’s an in-depth guide on the security feature.

What is SIM Lock on Android phones?

A SIM lock is an added layer of security which is different from your phone lock and completely ensures that nobody can misuse your number if the phone is lost or stolen. This lock is also a special PIN that you can set up and be used every time you shut down and turn on the phone. The SIM Lock is powerful enough to work even when the SIM card is removed from the current phone to another device and it still won’t let them access your data.

How does SIM Lock keep your phone data secure?

SIM Locks operate at the network level and are not linked to your phone manual settings. The PIN for SIM Lock is offered by the network provider and this can be changed from the default version in your phone settings.

SIM cards are usually safe but phishing attacks have made it impossible to tell if your number has been exposed or exploited. SIM swapping is the biggest threat to your data, as the hackers can clone your number and use it for different activities to steal data and money.

SIM Lock helps in such cases because the hacker can try to cheat the operator by sharing your personal details to access the number. But the Lock PIN is private and even the network provider won’t be able to share it with others, or even someone disguised as you.

How to activate SIM Lock on your Android phone

First use the default SIM lock given by the operator to change the Lock PIN for your SIM card. You will have the current PIN on the box that comes with the device. Follow these steps to set up the SIM Lock:

  • Go to Settings
  • Swipe down to Security and Privacy
  • Tap on More Settings which is below the section
  • Tap on SIM Lock
  • Enable the Lock SIM card toggle button
  • Enter the default SIM Lock PIN
  • Now change the SIM Lock PIN in the settings page
  • Enter the default PIN and now enter the changed PIN and tap on Ok

Make sure you don’t enter the wrong PIN three times which will block the SIM and you will need to get a new SIM card to use the number.

The feature is mostly the same on all Android software versions and brands but there could be some changes which will be easy to follow if you have the basics covered.

What happens if your SIM card is blocked?

If you mistakenly end up feeding the wrong PIN three times and are locked out of the SIM, the phone will ask you to enter a Personal Unlock Key (PUK) which you will see in the packet that came with the SIM card and it will be an eight-digit number.

Does SIM Lock work on eSIM for phones?

eSIM also can be used to SIM Lock but the whole use of the digital SIM makes it more secure than the physical card which anybody can remove and use on another phone.
