Online financial fraud or scams are on the rise in India, and in an attempt to curb this menace, the government introduced the Chakshu Portal, which allows citizens to alert authorities about fraudulent communications quickly.

This ensures that India’s cyber and telecom security is strengthened, as this portal provides an additional line of protection against anonymous criminals who steal money from people through various online modes.

What is Chakshu Portal and how it works?

Launched by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in March 2024, the Chakshu platform was introduced under the Sanchar Saathi initiative to report suspected fraud communications on calls, SMS and WhatsApp. The portal can be used to report any fraudulent communication within the last 30 days.

This platform makes it easier to report fraud calls and messages, which include spam calls, SMS, and WhatsApp communications. The Chakshu portal not only helps in reporting fraud but also serves as a crucial tool in safeguarding oneself from potential fraudulent activities.

What types of fraud can we report on the Chakshu Portal?

The Chakshu portal allows citizens of India to report a wide range of fraudulent activities. These include:

KYC fraud: Financial scams related to banks, electricity, gas connections, insurance policies, where your KYC number is used

Impersonation: Individuals pretending to be government officials, a friend, or a relative.

Fake customer care: Deceptive customer care helplines offering fraudulent job offers, lotteries, bank incentives, and loan offers.

Automated calls: Multiple automated or robotic communications.     Malicious links: Fraudulent links or messages that could lead to harmful websites.

How to report a fraud on the Chakshu portal?

Here is how users can register a complaint using the Chakshu portal:

  • Access the portal by visiting the Sanchar Saathi website
  • Scroll down to the Citizen Centric Services section and click on “Chakshu -Report Suspected Fraud.”
  • Describe the fraud: Specify the type of fraud. Categories include KYC issues, sextortion, or malicious links sent via SMS
  • Upload screenshots: Attach screenshots of the fraudulent communication or a screenshot of the call
  • Ensure the date and time of the image are visible
  • You can also provide additional information within the provided 500-character limit to elaborate on the incident.
  • Provide your contact number and any other relevant information
  • Authorise your complaint by entering the OTP sent to your registered mobile number to verify your submission.
  • Once verified, the report will be submitted.

The integration with the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) enhances this effort by enabling efficient information sharing with relevant authorities to curb such activities in India. When you submit your report, an investigation will begin, ultimately leading to the permanent IMEI blacklisting of the perpetrator's device.
