Apple has announced a new set of child safety features that will arrive later this year with iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. The company says the updates are designed to help parents manage what content children can access, who they can communicate with and how much time they spend on their devices.

The new tools build on Apple's existing parental controls and introduce features such as simplified child account setup, Ask to Browse, Time Allowances and a redesigned Screen Time experience.

Child accounts get a simpler setup process

Apple says creating a child account remains the foundation of its parental control system. The account enables age-based protections across Apple devices, including restrictions on adult websites, age-appropriate media access and App Store limitations.

Parents setting up a new device for their child will be guided through the child account creation process. According to Apple, child accounts are mandatory for children under the age of 13 and can be used for children up to 18 years old.

The company is also introducing a new setup option that allows parents to decide which apps are available to children from the beginning. Parents can start with a small set of essential apps and gradually expand access over time.

Ask to Browse and communication controls

Apple is expanding its parental approval tools with a new feature called Ask to Browse. Similar to Ask to Buy, which requires parental approval before downloading apps or making purchases, Ask to Browse lets parents approve access to new websites in Safari.

The company is also strengthening communication controls. Parents can require approval before children connect with new contacts through Messages, FaceTime and Phone.

Communication Safety is receiving an update as well. In addition to blurring nudity in shared content, the feature will now detect and block violent or graphic content in images and videos shared with children.

New tools to manage screen time

Apple is introducing Time Allowances, giving parents more control over how long children can use specific app categories, including social media, entertainment and gaming apps.

Parents will also be able to create schedules that determine when certain apps can be accessed throughout the day or week. Apple says this can help children stay focused during school hours and other important activities.

Screen Time is also being redesigned to provide a clearer overview of device usage, app activity and parental controls in a single dashboard.

Availability

The new child safety features will be available through software updates for iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 later this year. Apple says developers will also gain access to new tools that can help create age-appropriate experiences within apps while preserving user privacy.
