India has seen a surge in online scams lately, and you can report one using the national cybercrime reporting portal from the Indian government and follow up with it, too.

Over the past few years, India has seen a massive rise in digital or online transactions. From shopping online to ordering food, groceries, or medicines, this digital transformation has given people ease of online transactions, without worrying about holding physical cash or currencies all the time. The driving force behind this rapidly growing digital space is UPI (Unified Payment Interface).

However, this rapid growth in digital payments has also led to a significant increase in online scams, with cybercriminals trying new tricks to defraud individuals. As online scams are rampant, sadly, many individuals have lost thousands to crores to these faceless fraudsters online. To combat this growing menace, the government of India has launched the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal to aid victims in reporting cyber fraud and other cybercrimes.

This portal allows users to report cybercrime, including financial fraud, and subsequently register a complaint and follow up with it. If you have been targeted or know someone who has fallen victim to an online scam, here's what you need to know to recover your money and prevent any further financial loss.

Types of online scams

Here are a few common types of online scams that are currently on the rise in India -

Phishing: This type of scam is the most rampant in India at the moment, where fraudsters impersonate legitimate banking institutions and government agencies, and request a user’s OTP SMS, bank password, or card PIN, to perform a financial fraud. Sometimes a scammer can also send a malicious link to steal your money through the bank’s server.

Fake Investment Schemes: Here, fraudsters lure victims with promises of high returns with high-reward investment opportunities. They generally connect with users through popular social media and messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, or others and offer various ways to earn money through small investments in work-from-home jobs or any fake online scheme.

UPI scam: With the rise of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions, scammers have found a new field for fraud. Here, unaware users are tricked into sharing UPI PINs through calls or fraudulent links to initiate unauthorised UPI transactions.
