AC Dry mode removes excess moisture during humid weather, making rooms feel more comfortable. Here is how and when to use it effectively during monsoon.

Monsoon weather can make a room feel warm and sticky even when the outdoor temperature is moderate. This discomfort is often caused by high humidity rather than heat alone. Using the Dry mode available on most air conditioners can help remove excess moisture and make the room more comfortable.

Dry mode may also consume less electricity than Cool mode under suitable conditions. However, the savings depend on the AC model, humidity level, room size and duration of use.

Look for a water-droplet symbol or the word “Dry” on the AC remote. Press the Mode button repeatedly until the relevant option appears on the remote’s display.

Some air conditioners allow users to select a temperature in Dry mode, while others automatically control the temperature and fan speed. If temperature adjustment is available, begin at around 24 to 26 degrees Celsius instead of selecting an extremely low setting.

Close all doors and windows before turning on the AC. This prevents humid outdoor air from continuously entering the room and increasing the appliance’s workload.

How Long Should You Use Dry Mode?

Run Dry mode when the room feels damp or sticky despite a moderate temperature. Depending on the room and humidity level, operating it for one to three hours may be sufficient to improve comfort.

You can switch back to Cool mode if the room remains hot after its humidity has fallen. Dry mode is not intended to replace normal cooling during very hot weather because its primary purpose is dehumidification.

Avoid running it continuously without checking the room’s comfort level. Excessive dehumidification may make the air feel uncomfortably dry, particularly for people sensitive to dry skin, eyes or nasal passages.

How Dry Mode Helps Reduce Electricity Use

In Dry mode, the AC generally operates its compressor and fan differently to prioritise moisture removal. The compressor may cycle or modulate its output instead of working aggressively to lower the temperature.

This can reduce electricity consumption when the weather is humid but not extremely hot. The benefit is not guaranteed, however, because operating behaviour differs between fixed-speed and inverter ACs.

Users should not expect Dry mode to make a very hot room cool faster. Cool mode remains more suitable when rapid temperature reduction is required.

How to Make Dry Mode More Effective

Clean the AC filters regularly because accumulated dust restricts airflow and reduces dehumidification performance. Monsoon moisture can also encourage mould growth on dirty filters.

Check that water is draining correctly from the indoor unit. A blocked drainpipe can cause leakage, unpleasant smells and reduced moisture removal.

A ceiling fan can be operated at low speed to distribute the conditioned air more evenly. Avoid using high fan speeds if they make the room uncomfortable.

Keep curtains closed when direct sunlight enters the room, and ensure the outdoor unit has sufficient ventilation. These basic measures reduce the AC’s workload regardless of the selected mode.
