Google is using AI to generate 75 percent of code: What do the human techies do?

Google is one of the many tech companies that is now heavily relying on AI to generate code which puts a big question mark on the value and purpose of human engineers. The company’s chief, Sundar Pichai has claimed that 75 percent of code at Google is now handled by AI and only overseen by humans at the approval level.
The company has done a few lay offs in the last 10 months with most in the sales, marketing and support teams targeted. But looking at the pace of AI involved in daily operations, expect more techies to be in the firing line very soon.

AI does coding, what about the engineers?
Many industry experts have sounded the bugle around the impact of AI on the workforce and Google’s Pichai has illustrated the trust that AI has gotten in a short time. However, the engineers are still around and at Google they are being handed over the control to manage and tweak the AI agents and make them work together.

AI is reliable but some mishaps have shown that human support is completely needed. These engineers command the AI agents to run parallel tasks and oversee that all the systems are working in top shape and intervene if needed. This is where you need the workforce to be upskilled to tackle these AI demands and that is the crowd which will thrive in the new era.
How work goes on
As for Google, the heavy use of AI and the balance of human intervention seems to have increased the output in less time. In fact, the new Gemini app for macOS had reportedly moved from concept to prototype stage in a few days. AI agents are being trained on the job by the human engineers which puts further spotlight on the need for AI to be monitored which is likely to be removed from the process in the foreseeable future.
AI is getting better, smarter and powerful. It needs data and more training to get to the level of human coders and companies like Google and Meta are showing a path that more entities will be taking soon. It is not just about upskilling anymore, it also needs smarter calculation of where AI and humans can co-exist.
