Google Wallet gets Aadhaar support, enables digital ID verification in India

Google has enabled Aadhaar-based digital identity support in Google Wallet for users in India. The update allows individuals to store their Aadhaar details on their smartphones as a digital credential that can be used for identity verification. The rollout is part of Google’s broader effort to expand digital ID capabilities across markets while reducing dependence on physical documents.

How the Aadhaar integration works

The feature has been introduced in collaboration with the Unique Identification Authority of India. Users can add their Aadhaar details to Google Wallet, where the information is stored securely on the device rather than being shared as a static copy.

Google is using a verifiable credential system, which allows users to share only specific pieces of information when required. For instance, instead of presenting a full Aadhaar card, users can confirm details such as age or identity without exposing additional personal data. The system is based on global digital identity standards and includes selective data-sharing controls.

Where it can be used

Google has outlined multiple early use cases through its partner network. Services like PVR INOX can enable age verification for movie access, while platforms such as BharatMatrimony can use verified credentials to improve user authenticity.

Other integrations include Atlys for auto-filling visa applications and Mygate for verifying visitors or service personnel. Google also indicated that platforms like Snabbit are expected to adopt the system for identity checks.

Expansion beyond India

The India rollout is part of a wider expansion of digital identity features. Google said users in countries such as Singapore, Taiwan and Brazil can now create ID passes based on passport information and store them in Wallet. These digital IDs can be used for both online and in-person verification scenarios.

The move highlights a shift toward device-based identity verification, where users retain greater control over how their personal information is shared.
