Apple’s new chief John Ternus will be starting in his role from September 1, 2026 and taking over from Tim Cook, his first task will be to host the next iPhone series launch event in the same month. In the latest Bloomberg newsletter, Apple is the obvious highlight subject and Ternus has been given a ‘strong pipeline’ of products that will either make or break his reign as the Apple chief in the years to come.

We also know that Apple is bringing its first foldable iPhone to the market this year but there is a big chink in the company’s armour that Ternus will be expected to not only launch but make it a success.

New Apple, new devices

Ternus will have a lot of new categories to launch, including the AI-based smart home devices, as well as the touchscreen MacBook version. But all eyes will be on the foldable iPhone which rumours suggest will be called iPhone Ultra and feature a bookstyle design.

The company is tipped to introduce this product along with the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max models, while reserving the base iPhone 18 and the affordable 18e for early next year. The smart home category will need the new Siri to work flawlessly, and show that Apple under Ternus can get a new lease of life in this arena.

Why is Tim Cook leaving now?

Apple is in a healthy position financially and it has people still lining up in queues to buy the latest products. Cook probably feels this is the right time for the new guy to take over and gradually leave their imprint on the company. And what better to set your image and make AI a big part of the company and its own ecosystem products.

Besides these, Apple should be eyeing the smart glasses segment, again with AI at the core. And Ternus, with his hardware expertise should have the know-how and the pedigree to deliver on multiple fronts. Ternus has clearly shown his credibility with Apple’s gradual switch from Intel to M-series silicone for Macs and iPads. Now he needs to fit into the big boots of Tim Cook and take the tech giant into the new era.
