Apple has ruffled the feathers of the PC industry with the MacBook Neo launch this year and Google seems to have its own plans in place to compete. The company has teased its new Googlebook which seems to be the successor to the Chromebook and gets all the Gemini AI goodness with better Android compatibility. The laptop space certainly has a lot of room for players in the affordable segment, even though Windows has served millions for years.

The MacBook Neo has opened up some worrying signs for brands, so Google seems to be entering at a time when people might be looking for options beyond the conventional platforms. Googlebook is likely to be Google’s new-gen focus and expected to shift away from making more ChromeOS-powered devices.

What Googlebook promises

Google is going to follow Microsoft’s model to have this new platform running on devices (or Googlebooks) made by brands like Dell, HP, Asus and Lenovo among others. Google claims the new device will get a premium and featherweight design, but heavyweight on power. The company does make similar claims for the Pixel series but the Tensor chip doesn’t really make its mark in comparison to the best in the market.

We do hope the Googlebooks can match these claims and deliver a new Android-centric PC experience, which could eventually become the gateway for the rumoured Aluminium OS that the company has been working on for the last few years.

When is Googlebook launching

Google will share more concrete details about the Googlebook later this year but we do expect some hints about the product at next week’s I/O 2026 keynote to get the developers up to speed on its plans for the device.

Some might say that Google could have persisted with the Pixelbook moniker for its new product but it sounds like the company wants to go for a full overhaul rather than just refresh an existing device.

The market needs a strong alternative to the Neo as well as the wide range of budget Windows laptops. Can Googlebook deliver in the same fashion as Apple’s latest model? We will need all the details about the platform and the device to give a definitive answer.
